The 2026 Osun State Gubernatorial Election: A Test of APC Unity

As the Osun State gubernatorial election, scheduled for 2026, approaches, a critical question looms over the All Progressives Congress (APC): Will the party present a united front or face internal divisions? Many party members express concern that the upcoming primary elections could further weaken the party if not managed carefully. This anxiety is justified, as the competition for the party’s nomination has already sparked internal conflicts among candidates.

The 2022 election serves as a cautionary tale. The party’s defeat was attributed to its disunity, with the former governor, Chief Isiaka Oyetola, losing to Senator Ademola Adeleke. Despite his incumbency, Oyetola’s loss was not due to poor performance but rather the party’s failure to act as a cohesive unit. Splinter groups within the party undermined its interests, leading to the loss of power after 12 years in office. Now, there are fears that history may repeat itself unless leaders prioritize unity and select a candidate who can bring all factions together.

Many believe that Dr Akinade Ogunbiyi is the ideal candidate to lead the APC to victory in 2026. A seasoned businessman, grassroots politician, and philanthropist, Ogunbiyi has deep ties to Osun State. His extensive experience and broad appeal make him a unifying figure, capable of rallying support across different communities and party factions.

Ogunbiyi has declared his intention to represent the APC in the 2026 election, emphasizing his role as a unifying force. He stated, “I stand as a unifying factor among all the candidates, and I believe that by the special grace of God, if I emerge, they will rally round to support me and the progressives.” Should he not secure the nomination, he pledged to remain committed to the party’s goals.

A Visionary Leader with a Proven Track Record

Ogunbiyi’s background is marked by significant achievements. He founded Mutual Benefits Assurance Plc in 1995, transforming it from a small operation into a multinational conglomerate with a global reputation. The company has expanded into various sectors, including insurance, microfinance, real estate, and more. His leadership has earned him respect both nationally and internationally.

Beyond business, Ogunbiyi has been actively involved in the development of Osun State. As Vice Chairman of the Osun Development Association for 18 years, he gained valuable insights into the state’s challenges and opportunities. His contributions have focused on measurable development initiatives that benefit the people of Osun.

At the national level, Ogunbiyi has made a lasting impact on multiple industries. From finance to agriculture, his influence spans across sectors. He has also mentored numerous professionals who have become industry leaders. Through his weekly column in the Nigerian Tribune, he has promoted entrepreneurship and inspired economic growth.

His work in Liberia after the civil war further highlights his commitment to development. Ogunbiyi’s efforts helped rebuild the country’s economy and infrastructure, proving his ability to drive meaningful change.

A Commitment to Osun State’s Future

Ogunbiyi’s motivation for seeking the governorship stems from a desire to give Osun State a fresh start. He believes the state is rich in resources but lacks visionary leadership. “Osun State is too endowed for the people to be poor,” he said. “We have 26 viable mineral resources, but we need leaders who can turn these gifts into wealth for the citizens.”

He outlined plans to boost agriculture, education, and healthcare. “We will encourage subsistent farmers and promote mechanized farming,” he explained. “We will set up marketing boards and build silos for farm produce. Education will become a priority, and free healthcare services will be provided for children, pregnant women, and the elderly.”

Ogunbiyi also emphasized the importance of reforming the civil service to enhance productivity. “Our coming into office will be the beginning of a new era for Osun State,” he added.

A Unifying Force for the APC

Many APC stakeholders believe that Ogunbiyi’s widespread acceptance, popularity, and comprehensive vision make him the best choice to lead the party into the 2026 election. His ability to unite different factions and his proven track record position the APC for a strong campaign.

With his leadership, the APC has the potential to reclaim Osun State from the PDP and usher in a new era of progress and prosperity.
