A Life of Service and Compassion
Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1952, French-German theologian Albert Schweitzer once said, “the purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others.” This sentiment seems deeply connected to a philosophy that suggests we are here on earth to live, love, and leave legacies. One individual who embodies this idea is Chief Oluwole Oladapo Olanipekun, a man whose life has been defined by service, kindness, and compassion.
Born on 18 November 1951, Chief Olanipekun turns 74 today. He is a towering figure in Nigerian legal circles, known for representing the highest number of Nigerian presidents and governors in court. His career is a testament to his brilliance, integrity, and dedication to justice. However, his contributions extend far beyond the courtroom. He has become a symbol of generosity, philanthropy, and unwavering commitment to the betterment of society.
Leadership and Philanthropy
Chief Olanipekun currently serves as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), as well as Chairman of the Council of Bamidele Olumiluwa University of Education, Science and Technology (BOUESTI) in Ikere Ekiti. Prior to this, he held similar roles at the University of Ibadan (UI) and Ajayi Crowther University (ACU) in Oyo. Wherever he goes, he leaves a lasting impact, enriching institutions with his personal resources and vision.
At UI, he funded the construction of the Wole Olanipekun Lecture Theatre, a 350-capacity facility named in honor of his late father. In Oyo, he built and donated a Vice Chancellor’s lodge, while at BOUESTI, he gifted a Senate Building. His generosity extends beyond physical structures—he has also committed to further donations in honor of his wife, Mrs. Omolara Olanipekun. At UNILAG, his alma mater, his future contributions remain a mystery, but one can only imagine the transformative impact he will make.
Scholarships and Support for the Needy
In addition to his institutional contributions, Chief Olanipekun is a dedicated philanthropist. He annually spends millions of Naira on scholarships through the Wole Olanipekun Scholarship Board, supporting countless indigent but brilliant students. This writer, for instance, benefited twice from the scholarship program to complete their doctoral studies. His support was not just financial—it was emotional and motivational. He constantly encouraged me to finish my work, saying, “Sunday, I have seen many people with a PhD in English who cannot write all these things you are writing. Just find time and finish the programme. I will be very delighted the day you will tell me that you have finished your PhD.”
A Man of Humility and Generosity
Chief Olanipekun’s character is marked by humility, generosity, and a deep sense of responsibility toward others. In his home state of Ikere Ekiti and beyond, he has initiated poverty alleviation programs aimed at empowering the less privileged. Every year, he provides support for the elderly and empowers the youth with financial assistance and mentorship. His compassion extends to the sick and the weak, and he is always ready to lend a helping hand.
His personality is a blend of wisdom, courage, and consistency. He is a man who inspires others to reach their potential, often without seeking recognition. His words carry weight, and his actions reflect a deep sense of moral conviction. Despite his wealth and status, he remains simple, humble, and approachable.
