The singer of the song “Soul Man” had a string of hits back in the 1960s, and later collaborated with Bruce Springsteen, Mariah Carey, and many other well-known musicians.

The Grammy-winning soul singer who performed as part of the duo Sam & Dave has passed away.

According to his public relations representatives at 2911 Media, the cause of death was complications arising from a surgical procedure.

This person on Facebook paid tribute to Moore by saying, “Sam Moore, known as the Soulman and one of the greatest singers ever, has passed away. I’m not sad so much as grateful to have had the chance to meet him. It was an honor and a humbling experience to perform and even record with Sam.”

Moore was born in 1935 in Miami and started singing at a young age in church and clubs. She later teamed up with Dave Prater to form the duo Sam & Dave. Moore and Prater signed to Atlantic Records in 1964, and the following year were transferred to the label’s Memphis-based Stax Records, where they became the label’s biggest stars, second only to Otis Redding.

Sam & Dave released a string of huge R&B hits in the mid-1960s, including “Hold On! I’m Comin,” “When Something Is Wrong with My Baby,” “I Thank You,” and, most famously, “Soul Man,” which won the 1968 Grammy for Best Rhythm & Blues Group Performance, Vocal or Instrumental.

Sam & Dave stopped making music together in 1970, and as a solo artist, Davis recorded an album, but it sat unreleased from 1970 until 2002 due in part to the 1971 murder of the album’s producer, King Curtis. Over the years, Sam & Davis frequently got back together and broke up, with Davis eventually taking Sam to court over performing under their shared name, Sam & Dave.

Moore fought a battle with addiction in the 1980’s, and after overcoming it with the support of his wife Joyce Moore, whom he married in 1982, he became a strong advocate against substance abuse. He went on to record duets with Lou Reed and Don Henley later in the 1980’s.
