Scientists have discovered a strange signal emanating from the depths of the ocean.
During a recent study, experts found a signal dating back over 10 million years, which could serve as a time marker to help synchronize the history of geological events.
The team from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), working alongside TUD Dresden University of Technology and the Australian National University (ANU), detected an unexpected spike in a radioactive isotope within samples retrieved from the floor of the Pacific Ocean.
They uncovered bones and wood remnants that can be accurately dated.
HZDR physicist Dr. Dominik Koll explained: “The radiocarbon method is limited to dating samples no more than 50,000 years old. To date older samples, we need to use other isotopes, such as cosmogenic beryllium-10 (10Be).”
Dominik Koll and his team analyzed ferromanganese crusts collected from several kilometers beneath the Pacific Ocean.
