A Historic Day of Tradition and Celebration

Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, known for its iconic “brown roofs,” transformed into a vibrant spectacle of history and grandeur on a momentous day when Oba Rashidi Ladoja was crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland. The event marked a significant milestone in the city’s cultural heritage, drawing attention from dignitaries, leaders, and citizens alike.

Oba Ladoja was nominated and selected as the 44th Olubadan by the kingmakers on August 4, 2025, and his nomination was approved by Governor Seyi Makinde on August 21, 2025. This followed the passing of the previous Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, on July 7, 2025. The coronation ceremony was not just an event but a celebration of Ibadan’s rich traditions and its enduring legacy.

The city stood still as streets buzzed with music, family compounds brimmed with joy, and Mapo Hall, the traditional seat of Ibadan royalty, gleamed with the presence of high-profile figures. President Bola Tinubu, along with governors from various states, former officials, and other dignitaries, gathered to witness this once-in-a-generation coronation. It was a rare occasion that brought together a wide array of leaders, making it one of the most significant events in recent Ibadan history.

Traditional Leaders and Cultural Display

Traditional institutions played a vital role in the ceremony. The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar; the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade; and several other royal figures were present. The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, was represented by his Olori due to his absence for the Olojo Festival in Ile-Ife. The presence of these leaders underscored the significance of the event and the deep-rooted cultural importance of the coronation.

From all entry points into the city, Ibadan had dressed for the occasion. Banners, billboards, and flex prints lined the roads, bearing congratulatory messages and images of the new Olubadan. The city was alive with excitement and anticipation, showcasing the unity and pride of the people.

Family Compounds Filled with Joy

Beyond the main venue, Ibadan’s heartbeats pulsed in family compounds where canopies and sound systems had been set up. Music, dance, and prayers filled the air as families celebrated the unique occasion. In every compound, the sights and scents of cooking filled the space, with dishes like amala, ewedu, gbegiri, jollof rice, and fried rice on display. Drinks flowed freely, with bottled water, soft drinks, beer, wine, palm wine, and local gin available for guests and elders.

Drummers kept the rhythm of celebration alive, while elders and youths danced to Fuji and Sakara tunes. Many wore radiant aso ebi, showcasing Ibadan’s culture at its finest. Guests were handed customised items such as wrappers, fez caps, Ankara bags, and hand fans featuring the Olubadan’s portrait, adding to the festive atmosphere.

A Dawn of Surprises

The day began with a royal gesture befitting the new monarch. Oba Ladoja received a gleaming white Rolls-Royce as a gift, presented by the Agba Oye of Ibadan and Chairman of Shoreline Company, Chief Kola Karim, through Mogaji AbdulJelyl Adanla. The luxury car set the tone for a day of grandeur, symbolizing the beginning of his reign.

Sacred Rites and Symbolic Acts

From his family home, the monarch journeyed to Labosinde Compound, the seat of the Oluwo of Ibadan. There, he was decorated with Akoko leaves, an ancient rite marking the dawn of kingship, by the Afobaje and Oluwo of Ibadan, Chief Waheed Popoola. In a symbolic act, Oba Ladoja prostrated three times before the obas and the Oluwo, the last time he would ever bow to anyone.

The rituals continued as the monarch chose from the sacred calabashes, picking the one containing honey (igba oyin), a sweet omen for his reign. At the Ose-Meji Temple, the Abore (chief priest) arrived in a dramatic procession, performing the crowning rites. As Oba Ladoja emerged, chants of “Idera De!” echoed, reviving his 2003 campaign slogan.

A King in Vigour

At 81, Oba Rashidi Ladoja carried himself with the composure of a much younger man. His posture was upright, his steps deliberate, and his gaze steady. Despite the long day of rituals, he radiated strength and calmness, beaming with a constant smile. His presence was iconic as he made his way to Mapo Hall, greeted by the crowd’s chants and the rhythm of talking drums.

Mapo Hall Comes Alive

By noon, Mapo Hall was a sea of anticipation. Canopies, banners, and traditional drums electrified the venue as thousands gathered under the sun. The music of Fuji star Taiye Currency kept the crowd in high spirits, while security operatives maintained order. Vendors sold water, soft drinks, and snacks to the expectant crowd.

When the presidential convoy finally arrived, the atmosphere exploded into a festival of ululations and waving hands. The President’s arrival marked the official commencement of the historic ceremony, setting the stage for the next phase of celebrations.

Ibadan State Re-Echoed

As Oba Ladoja addressed the gathering, his first official request was not personal. He called for the creation of Ibadan State, emphasizing the priority of the people. Earlier, the chairman of the coronation committee had also urged the same. Governor Seyi Makinde honored the tradition by presenting the staff of office to Oba Ladoja, sealing his ascension before the jubilant crowd.

A Record of Excellence

For Governor Makinde, this was more than a ceremonial duty. In just five years of his tenure, he had crowned three Olubadans, a record that stands out in Ibadan’s modern history. He presented the staff of office to the late Oba Lekan Balogun, the late Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, and now to Oba Rashidi Ladoja.

President’s Tribute

President Bola Tinubu, delighted to be present, recalled the unfortunate incident of Ladoja’s impeachment as Oyo State governor in 2006. He praised the monarch for his resilience and determination, highlighting that just as he once declared “Emi Lokan,” so it is now Ladoja’s turn as Olubadan of Ibadanland.

Celebration Continues

With the President departing for Abuja and other guests leaving the venue, the celebration continued at various family compounds and the designated event center at Obafemi Awolowo Stadium. The day ended with joy, unity, and a renewed sense of pride for Ibadan and its people.
