Ukraine calls on Europe to appoint its own representative for peace negotiations, according to Bloomberg. “A decision on this should be made quickly,” said Ihor Zhovkva, Deputy Chief of Staff to President of Ukraine, to Bloomberg.

to have a status equivalent to that of Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, U.S. President Donald Trump, or Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.

Informal summit on Ukraine

On Monday, a casual gathering of European leaders to discuss security and the situation in Ukraine will take place in Paris. The meeting has been arranged by French President Emmanuel Macron. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has already arrived in the French capital.

The talks in Paris will also include leaders of government: Keir Starmer from the UK, Olaf Scholz from Germany, Giorgia Meloni from Italy, Pedro Sanchez from Spain, Dick de Hoop Scheffer from the Netherlands, and Mette Frederiksen representing the Baltic and Scandinavian countries.

The meeting will also include NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President Antonio Costa.

A meeting of European leaders in Paris regarding Ukraine was reported by Reuters.

The meeting is connected to the Munich Security Conference events, where US officials stated they see no role for Europe in the negotiations to bring an end to the conflict in Ukraine.

Will Europe be in a position where it can no longer rely on the USA?

The New York Times assessed the situation in its Monday article. On Sunday, the Munich Security Conference came to a close, which, according to the NYT, highlighted that the relationship between Europe and the USA is in a deep crisis.

Furthermore, the US envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellog, also attending Munich, stressed that the Trump administration does not support European leaders’ direct involvement in negotiations with Russia.

There’s concern in European capitals about being used as pawns in Washington’s talks with Moscow to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, given that the President of the United States had discussions with Putin without consulting U.S. allies.
