House Speaker Mike Johnson said Saturday that he was “grateful and pleased” that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had shifted his stance on a proposed U.S.-Ukraine mineral deal, claiming Zelenskyy had “actually apologized” and reaffirmed Ukraine’s interest in the agreement.

NBC News, citing sources, reported that signing the mineral deal alone would not be enough to restore U.S. aid to Ukraine. Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, reportedly expects Zelenskyy to change his approach to peace talks by showing willingness to make territorial concessions to Russia.
Trump also wants Ukraine to take steps toward holding elections and possibly for Zelenskyy to consider “leaving office.”
On March 4, Zelenskyy said Ukraine is ready to sign the mineral agreement “at any time and in any convenient format.”
The deal, initially set to be signed on Feb. 28, was derailed after a dispute at the White House between Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and Zelenskyy.
Following the fallout, the U.S. suspended military aid and scaled backintelligence sharing with Ukraine.
Ukraine races to seal minerals deal with U.S. – Foreign Ministry
Talks between Ukrainian and American delegations are scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia early next week, with discussions potentially including a halt to air and sea strikes.
Zelenskyy has rejected Trump’s claim that Ukraine owes the U.S. billions, saying the final version of the mineral deal does not include any reference to a “$500, $350, or $100 billion debt.”
, with Ukraine investing 50% of future revenues from new mineral developments.
On March 4, Zelenskyy wrote on X that the White House meeting did not go as expected but reaffirmed Ukraine’s commitment to “constructive cooperation” and its willingness to negotiate peace.
