A Political Landscape in Turmoil

Dr. John Kome, a seasoned politician and prominent figure within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), was the party’s candidate for the Ikeja Constituency 1 in the 2023 general elections. In an interview with EJIKEME OMENAZU, Kome, who once served as the State Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Lagos, shares his insights on the current political situation, particularly regarding the upcoming 2027 general elections.

The Current Political Situation

The political landscape in Nigeria is currently described as “dicey, confusing, and uninspiring.” This perception stems from the alleged interference by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the opposition parties. According to Kome, this interference undermines democratic principles, which are supposed to provide citizens with choices in leadership. When the ruling party attempts to suppress the opposition, it risks turning Nigeria into a one-party state, which he argues ridicules democracy.

Kome also criticizes actions taken by various branches of government—Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary—that seem to mock democratic norms. He highlights concerns about the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its policies, suggesting they may be influenced by the APC. These actions, he claims, have left Nigerians angry and disillusioned.

PDP’s Internal Struggles

Regarding the PDP, Kome emphasizes that he has contributed significantly to the party. He contested the last election, invested heavily, and served as the Director General for a presidential candidate. However, he notes that internal conflicts, especially following the presidential primary, have led to the party’s fragmentation. The fallout from these events has created divisions within the PDP, with some members aligning with figures like Nyesom Wike and others under the leadership of Senator Adolphus Wabara.

Kome acknowledges that while he hasn’t defected from the PDP, the Supreme Court’s judgment places the party in the hands of the Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman, Wabara. He is closely observing the developments but urges Wike to move past past grievances and offer exemplary leadership to younger politicians.

Challenges Facing the ADC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has faced significant challenges, according to Kome. He recalls his time as Executive Secretary of the ADC in Lagos, where he managed the position effectively. However, after contesting under the PDP, he stepped away from the ADC. Despite the party reaching out to him, Kome feels that the ADC is facing hurdles, including the Supreme Court’s decision that its case should go back to the High Court. He suggests that this ruling could further destabilize the ADC.

The NDC and Zoning Issues

The New Democratic Party (NDC) appears to be benefiting from the crises in both the APC and PDP. Kome comments on Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso’s acceptance of the zoning of the presidential ticket to the South, calling it a demonstration of sportsmanship in Nigerian politics. He emphasizes the importance of respecting party constitutions and fair play, especially concerning zoning.

Kome believes that unity among opposition parties is crucial for challenging the APC. Without such unity, defeating President Bola Tinubu will be a difficult task.

The 2027 Elections: A Walk-Over?

Despite the APC’s apparent advantages, Kome is not convinced that the 2027 elections will be a walk-over. He predicts surprises, emphasizing that the ruling party may face challenges despite its resources and support.

Lagos Politics in 2027

Lagos politics, according to Kome, has long been influenced by godfatherism and religious factors. However, the 2027 governorship election may present a different scenario. He points to two major contenders: Hamzat, representing the Fashola camp, and Ambode, from the Ambode camp. Kome believes that a strong opposition coalition could shift the narrative, potentially challenging the status quo.
