Mark Chapman has shared some insights into what viewers should anticipate from the upcoming Match of the Day lineup for next season, and it appears there won’t be much change.

Chapman is set to join forces with
Gabby Logan
and
Kelly Cates
to host the
BBC
‘s flagship football show from the start of the next season, with
Gary Lineker
resigning from the position after 26 years as chairman.

When Cates, Chapman, and Logan start their new roles following Lineker’s exit, they will divide the hosting responsibilities for Match of the Day and Match of the Day 2 among themselves.

Chapman, who spoke during the event, was discussing the
2024 Sports Journalism Awards
He has been a frequent presence on the BBC for several years, often hosting the Match of the Day 2 coverage on Sundays.

He has similarly collaborated with Cates at Sky Sports, whereas Logan also boasts experience as a host of the program.

And now, fans have gotten a firsthand account of what changes lie ahead for next year, as Chapman was queried about what to anticipate during the 2025-26 season.

‘There’s nothing different,’ said Chapman. I hear folks continually say, “This will shift or that will alter.” But I truly believe nothing will change at all.

‘It will continue to display all the key moments and allow for some casual conversation. Therefore, if you’re looking for significant changes, I imagine you might feel somewhat let down by it.’

‘I think we are still just going to do the same thing and talk about football and have a laugh and that will be that.’

Logan, whose appointment was announced by the BBC in January, revealed that she and her fellow co-hosts went to great lengths to keep the news a secret ahead of their unveiling.

The three formed a covert WhatsApp group to talk exclusively about Match of the Day and strengthen their connection before the major unveiling, going as far as deleting messages to ensure the information remained confidential among themselves.

‘I didn’t even tell my mum,’ Logan said, having only told her husband and former Scotland rugby star Kenny.

I created a group chat named ‘The Match of the Day Three,’ and we had vanishing messages because Chappers was quite paranoid about privacy. The only one who knew about it was Kenny!

It has been revealed that BBC executives, led by the newly appointed Director of Sport Alex Kay-Jelski, are keen to steer the program in a new direction through the addition of Logan, Chapman, and Cates.

Introducing a revolving roster of hosts along with two new female presenters marks significant upheaval for Match of the Day, which has had Leiceter’s own Gary Lineker at the helm for more than 25 years.
