ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.
(KRQE) — The city is nearing implementation of a new initiative aimed at offering employment chances to individuals experiencing homelessness under a program titled “A Better Way Forward.” “Many folks simply require a job—a purposeful occupation—that provides not only financial compensation but also instills self-respect, fulfillment, and enough funds to secure necessities such as accommodation and meals,” stated Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller.
As per official municipal records, the initiative would provide employment opportunities centered around tidying up and upkeep responsibilities within various urban areas. These positions will be accessible to individuals currently residing at the Gateway Center and Gateway West. City officials have stated that this scheme intends to foster independence and steadiness among those experiencing homelessness, ultimately striving towards decreasing overall rates of homelessness over time.
“This provides them with a rapid chance not just to get involved but also to take pride in the income they earn and find a way out of their current predicament with further assistance,” stated Gilbert Ramirez, the Director of Health at the Housing & Homelessness Department.
Should the city council approve it, the initiative might support as many as 16 individuals working at a rate of $12 per hour with full-time schedules. The estimated expenditure for this initial phase would be slightly less than $650,000 over twelve months. This proposal is scheduled to face a vote from the city council on Monday seeking their ultimate endorsement.
