Security Operations Target Terrorists in Niger State
Security forces have successfully eliminated a significant number of terrorists in the Rijau Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State. The operation was part of a broader military campaign aimed at curbing the activities of armed groups that have been causing unrest in the region.
The terrorists were reportedly moving in large numbers from Zamfara State into Niger State through Rijau and Mariga LGAs when security forces launched an offensive against them. According to a Facebook post by the Army Headquarters, troops of Operation Forest Sanity III conducted a fighting patrol on July 22, 2025, starting from Maru LGA in Zamfara State. They passed through Kaboro and Sangeko before reaching Makuku and Dankolo in Kebbi State, based on intelligence about the movement of these militants.
Upon reaching Rijau and Warari in Niger State, the troops engaged the terrorists in a firefight, resulting in numerous casualties and the destruction of 18 motorcycles. The Army also recovered several AK-47 rifles with loaded magazines. A follow-up operation on July 23, 2025, led to further recoveries of weapons and motorcycles. Despite these successes, one soldier lost his life during the operation.
Air Strikes Target Terrorist Groups
In addition to ground operations, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) conducted successful airstrikes targeting terrorist groups in the Rijau LGA. An intelligence source confirmed that the Air Component of Operation Fasan Yamma eliminated no fewer than 95 terrorists in major airstrikes around Ragada and Warari villages. NAF fighter jets intercepted the group as they traveled from Zamfara on Tuesday at approximately 1500 hours.
Intelligence revealed that the bandits were moving with 108 motorcycles, armed with sophisticated weapons, heading toward Warari and Rijau LGAs. The NAF intercepted them between Ragada and Warari villages, located at general coordinates 10° 54′ 1.51′ N | 5° 25′ 4.96′ E. It was confirmed that only 13 motorcycles managed to escape, while the rest were neutralized.
Community Reactions and Ongoing Concerns
Residents of Warari and adjoining communities in Rijau LGA, as well as Ragada, Kakihum, Mazame, Maburya, and Kura in Mariga LGA, have fled their homes following intense gun battles between Nigerian Army troops and terrorists. Many residents expressed relief and gratitude for the successful elimination of many bandits.
A resident in Rijau, who preferred anonymity, said there was widespread celebration in Rijau and nearby communities after the successful operation. In a viral video circulating on social media, residents were seen jubilating and praising soldiers riding in armored vehicles for their efforts.
However, concerns remain as some insurgents are still regrouping in the Kotonkoro Forest, located in Mariga LGA of Niger State. Residents reported that the terrorists are moving westward toward villages such as Dankolo, Kumbashi, Maburya, and Kakihum. This pattern of movement is typical for the group, as they often seek revenge after being attacked.
Arrests and Rescues in Ongoing Operations
Security operatives have arrested a former councillor for Shambo Ward in Rijau LGA, Mamman Wazo, for allegedly claiming ownership of cows recovered from armed bandits. The suspect was apprehended alongside his accomplice by members of the Ragada Vigilante Group. Although the spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command did not confirm the arrest, it was reported that security forces had recently recovered rustled cattle following an air bombardment.
In another development, the Nigerian Army rescued 138 kidnapped victims and arrested several terrorist collaborators in ongoing operations across Zamfara, Borno, and Adamawa States. Troops of the 1 Brigade, along with local vigilantes, rescued 106 victims near Mayanchi Village in Zamfara. Additionally, 32 more victims were released to the Office of the National Security Adviser, along with several weapons.
These operations highlight the continued efforts of security forces to combat terrorism and protect civilian populations. The Army has reaffirmed its commitment to national security and appreciated the support of the communities involved in these operations.
