Governor Seyi Makinde Highlights Oyo State’s Sports Development at NFF Annual General Assembly
During the 81st Annual General Assembly of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), held in Ibadan, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde emphasized the state’s commitment to developing a robust sports economy. Over the past six years, his administration has implemented various policies and programs aimed at revitalizing sports infrastructure and promoting sporting activities.
The event took place at Theophilus Ogunlesi Hall, University College Hospital, Ibadan, and coincided with the U-20 Women Qualifiers Match between Nigeria and Rwanda at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, which was recently renovated by the Makinde-led government.
Governor Makinde expressed gratitude to the NFF for its support in rebuilding sports facilities and creating an environment that attracts national and international sporting events. He highlighted that Ibadan is now equipped to host major sporting events, including matches involving the Super Eagles, the Nigerian national football team.
He called on the NFF to conduct a thorough assessment of the state’s sporting facilities, assuring them that his administration would allocate the necessary resources to ensure these venues meet international standards. “On behalf of the government and the people of Oyo State, I want to thank the NFF president and your executive committee members for your interest in our state,” he said.
Makinde acknowledged the progress made in football development, particularly in the Nigeria Premier Football League, where reforms have led to a fairer and more competitive league. However, he pointed out that there is still room for improvement, especially in terms of funding. “Football is supposed to be a big event, but our people still watch other leagues. We need to attract big businesses to support our efforts,” he added.
He also reiterated his call for a five-year single term for NFF leadership, suggesting that such a move could bring stability and continuity to the federation. “If you have the opportunity for a second tenure, I advocate for five or six years single term. But I have enjoyed four years twice now. So, maybe you have to review your own constitution as well,” he said.
NFF President Praises Governor Makinde’s Contributions
NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau commended Governor Makinde for his contributions to football and sports in Oyo State. He specifically highlighted the governor’s support for the Shooting Stars Sporting Club (3SC) and the remodeling of the Lekan Salami Sports Complex. Gusau assured the residents of Oyo State that they would soon witness the Super Eagles playing in Ibadan.
“I could remember not just more than a month when I called upon you to request that I want us to be here to have this occasion, as well as to have our young under-20 girls to play their match against Rwanda here in the historic city of Ibadan, which you graciously approved for me,” Gusau said.
He also noted that the NFF has been working diligently to improve football in Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of continued support from fans and stakeholders. “We will do all within our powers to ensure the Super Eagles qualify for the next World Cup,” he added.
Former NFF President Calls for Unity and Support
Former NFF President Amaju Pinnick urged Nigerians to continue supporting the federation and remain optimistic about the Super Eagles’ chances of qualifying for the World Cup. His message aligned with the broader sentiment of unity and collaboration among football stakeholders.
Key Attendees at the Event
Governor Makinde was accompanied by several key figures, including the Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni; Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Alhaja Wasilat Adegoke; Commissioner for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Mr. Williams Akin-Funmilayo; Commissioner for Special Duties, Alhaja Faosat Sanni; and Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, CP Fatai Owoseni (Rtd).
