A Bold Heist in Hatton Garden
A group of armed robbers recently targeted a jeweller in Hatton Garden, London’s famous diamond district, stealing a collection of high-value items. The incident marks a significant escalation in a wave of smash-and-grab crimes that have been affecting the capital.
The three masked individuals entered the shop by posing as customers on Thursday. Footage captured them breaking out of the locked glass security doors while holding watches and various pieces of jewelry from Danesh International Jewellers. After leaving, they assaulted an elderly staff member and threatened area security before fleeing on foot at around 5:15 pm.
The Met Police are currently investigating the crime and have stated that the alleged thieves are still at large. According to the police, officers arrived on the scene within eight minutes and spoke to the business owner, who reported that three people armed with knives had threatened staff and stolen several high-value watches and a ring. Specialist detectives from the Met’s Flying Squad are now looking into the robbery, and increased patrols have been implemented in the area.
The Adams Family’s Influence
Hatton Garden has traditionally been under the protection of the Clerkenwell Crime Syndicate, also known as the Adams family. This criminal organization has controlled the area for years, and their influence is believed to have kept local shops from becoming targets of mass theft. Despite claims that their control has diminished, sources with decades of experience in the diamond district suggest that the gangsters’ grip remains strong.
It is said that even now, traders are terrified of crossing the family, as their power is still very much present in the area. It would be unwise for petty criminals to challenge them.
The Adams family, led by three notorious brothers—Terry, Tommy, and Patrick (Patsy)—initially gained power through extortion from market traders. Over time, they expanded their operations to include armed robbery and drug trafficking. It is believed that they laundered their money through Hatton Garden, using a diamond merchant, Smithfields, and a West End nightclub.
The 2015 Heist
One of the most infamous operations linked to the Adams family was the 2015 heist. Burglars reportedly worked through the Easter and Passover Bank Holiday, when many nearby businesses were closed. They entered the premises through a lift shaft and drilled through the 50cm thick vault walls with a Hilti power drill.
Sources previously told the Daily Mail that the Adams family could have been behind the entire operation. One source noted, “This street is full of useful tips and information. It is quite possible they (the Adams firm) are the source of the robbery. A burglary of this size cannot happen just like that — out of thin air. And these people are so powerful here that they can do anything.”
There was speculation that a particular box in the vault contained evidence that could have sent Adams to prison for life. A Scotland Yard source mentioned, “This was never about stealing all that gold and jewellery. It was a job arranged by a Mr Big who only appeared to have been interested in one particular box, the number of which he knew.”
A Surge in Criminal Activity
London has become a hotspot for jewel thieves, with multiple incidents occurring in a short period. In the span of a week, gangs targeted stores in Knightsbridge, Richmond, and Shepherd’s Bush, smashing windows, ramming SUVs into barred doors, and driving motorbikes through glass store fronts.
The most recent raid occurred on January 31, when hammer-wielding thugs broke into a family-run jeweller in Richmond. Two men were seen swinging a large hammer against the glass of Gregory & Co, causing significant damage. The gang then peeled away the glass and began filling a blue bag with expensive valuables.
An employee who witnessed the event described the robbers as appearing “out of nowhere” carrying a large sledgehammer and a bag. They started smashing the jeweller’s window, and the employees inside tried to stop them with small boxes, but with little success.
Just two days earlier, a moped gang conducted an audacious heist on a jewellery shop in Shepherd’s Bush. The shop had been targeted in a similar raid over six years ago. Police launched an urgent investigation after the attack, and a 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary.
Mr Khan, who only gave his surname, remarked that crime in the area has gotten worse. “It’s Shepherd’s Bush, there’s always young people causing trouble,” he said. “Crime around here has got so bad lately.”
Increasing Threats Across London
Days prior, a gang smashed their way into the designer store Yves Saint Laurent in central London, stealing luxury handbags worth up to £30,000. Footage showed balaclava-clad thugs clearing the shelves after ramming a black SUV through the window. A witness described the incident, noting the loud bang and the chaos that followed.
Another incident involved a gang of brazen robbers riding motorbikes who stole thousands of pounds worth of Rolex watches from the brand’s flagship store in Knightsbridge. Phone footage captured the event, showing two motorbikes descending on the Bucherer Rolex Boutique at One Hyde Park.
