Ekiti State’s Political Landscape in 2026: A Battle for Supremacy
As the June 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State approaches, the political arena is abuzz with activity. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are all engaged in intense competition to secure their candidates and dominate the narrative.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set the dates for party primaries between October 20 and November 10, 2025, with the final list of candidates expected to be published on January 19, 2026. This timeline allows parties until January 12, 2026, to finalize their choices before the official campaign period begins on January 21, 2026.
Each party is making every effort to attract members and supporters from other groups, emphasizing that winning the election is a matter of numbers and influence. The major contenders include the APC, PDP, ADC, and the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Internal Struggles Within Parties
Within the APC, four aspirants—Governor Biodun Oyebanji, Kayode Ojo, Abimbola Olawumi, and Atinuke Oluremi—participated in the screening process. Oyebanji and Oluremi were cleared, while Ojo and Olawumi were disqualified. This has sparked discussions about internal dynamics within the party.
In the PDP, four candidates are vying for the party ticket: Mrs. Funmi Ogun, Dr. Wole Oluyede, Peter Obafemi, and Dr. Funso Ayeni. Meanwhile, the ADC has attracted several prominent figures, including Prof. Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, Dare Bejide, and Apostle Ayodele David-Adesua.
Despite these challenges, the three leading parties share a common goal: to win the governorship and occupy the Oke Ayoba Government House starting October 16, 2026.
ADC’s Ambitions and Strategies
The ADC state chairman, Ilesanmi Omolayo, expressed confidence in his party’s ability to win the election and change the political narrative in Ekiti. He highlighted the strength of the coalition, which includes political heavyweights from various backgrounds.
Omolayo emphasized that the ADC is preparing thoroughly at all levels, from units to local government areas (LGAs). He assured transparency in the selection process, stating that the candidate will emerge without bias or partiality.
He also pointed out that many people are disillusioned with the current administration and are looking towards the ADC as an alternative. According to him, the PDP is no longer active in Ekiti, and some members of the APC are considering switching allegiance.
PDP’s Optimism and Challenges
The PDP, which has produced two previous governors, remains optimistic about its chances. Chief Sanya Atofarati, a PDP chieftain, reiterated the party’s preparedness for victory. He noted that the party is working to address past shortcomings and ensure inclusivity in its preparations.
Atofarati criticized the Oyebanji administration, citing issues such as poor infrastructure and lack of development. He argued that Ekiti residents have realized the limitations of the current government and are eager for change.
He also dismissed those who have left the PDP, stating that they are not committed to the party’s success. Instead, he highlighted the influx of new members, suggesting that the party is gaining momentum.
APC’s Confidence and Internal Dynamics
In contrast, APC state Publicity Secretary Segun Dipe described the PDP and ADC as “mere noise” and “election campaign propaganda.” He emphasized that the APC is well-prepared and confident of winning the election.
Dipe stated that the party has a clear understanding of its direction and that the primary process will likely result in a walkover for Governor Oyebanji. He also dismissed concerns about potential post-primary crises, asserting that the party will remain united.
However, the disqualification of Kayode Ojo, a prominent figure in the APC, has raised questions about the party’s internal dynamics. Despite this setback, Ojo’s supporters continue to hope for a resolution.
Conclusion
As the political landscape in Ekiti continues to evolve, the battle for the governorship remains fierce. Each party is leveraging its strengths and strategies to gain an edge in the upcoming election. With the clock ticking, the outcome of the 2026 governorship poll will depend on the effectiveness of each party’s efforts and the support they can muster from the electorate.
