A Journey of Dedication and Leadership in the Healthcare Sector
Dr. Olayemi Dawodu, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Cerba Lancet Nigeria, has built a remarkable career as a medical professional and leader in the healthcare sector. Her journey is marked by dedication, resilience, and a commitment to excellence that has shaped both her personal and professional life.
Shaping a Career Through Education and Experience
Dr. Dawodu’s early years were influenced by the example set by her father, who demonstrated a deep sense of selflessness and dedication to his work. This environment played a significant role in shaping her perspective on the impact one can have through their profession. As a histopathologist, she quickly realized that while her specialty might not be as commonly recognized as others, her work was integral to guiding treatment decisions across various medical fields.
The role of a pathologist involves analyzing samples to determine whether they are cancerous, infected, or something else entirely. This critical information directly influences patient care and outcomes. Dr. Dawodu’s early exposure to this aspect of medicine solidified her passion for the field.
Her time at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, further refined her understanding of the medical profession. Although there wasn’t a single “Eureka” moment that led her to choose histopathology, her experiences, education, and interactions with peers helped shape her decision. The realization that ordinary people could achieve extraordinary things through clarity, direction, and discipline inspired her to pursue a path that aligned with her values.
Transitioning into Leadership
Dr. Dawodu’s transition from a clinical specialist to a leadership role was driven by her desire for growth and a deeper understanding of organizational management. Her experience at SAID Business School, University of Oxford, was instrumental in this transformation. The Strategic Leadership Programme provided her with insights into executive leadership, mentorship, and collaborative problem-solving.
One of the most memorable aspects of the programme was a leadership exercise where participants led a choir at Balliol College. This experience offered profound insights into different leadership styles and the importance of listening and engaging with a team.
The lessons learned at SAID Business School had a practical impact on how Dr. Dawodu approached leadership back at Cerba Lancet Nigeria. She implemented changes such as improved onboarding processes for new staff and introduced monthly one-on-one meetings with direct reports to foster stronger relationships and better communication.
Growth and Challenges in the Workplace
When Dr. Dawodu joined Cerba Lancet Nigeria as a histopathologist in 2015, her mindset was clear: to deliver exceptional service and build strong relationships with the medical professionals who relied on her expertise. Her approach involved being accessible, collaborating closely with doctors and surgeons, and consistently delivering accurate diagnoses.
This effort paid off, as she managed to convince many doctors to trust local evaluations over foreign ones. By maintaining high standards and open communication, she helped retain a significant portion of samples within Nigeria.
Her transition to MD/CEO came unexpectedly but was made possible by her proven track record of excellence. While she admits she wasn’t fully prepared for the role, her prior leadership experiences, including serving as health prefect in secondary school and chief resident during her training, gave her a foundation to build upon.
Overcoming Challenges and Building Resilience
One of the toughest challenges Dr. Dawodu faced early in her career was the perception that she was merely “just a pretty face.” This challenge was compounded by the fact that she was also balancing the responsibilities of being a young mother while performing demanding tasks like conducting up to three autopsies daily.
Being known as the daughter of Professor Elesha also brought its own set of pressures. Instead of offering an advantage, it often felt like an extra burden. These experiences, however, strengthened her resolve and made her more determined to prove her capabilities independently.
Prioritizing Patient Outcomes and Business Growth
Today, as MD/CEO, Dr. Dawodu continues to focus on ensuring that every member of her team understands the importance of quality, culture, and patient-centered care. She emphasizes that the organization exists to serve patients, and every decision must reflect this core value.
Her leadership approach is rooted in collaboration, continuous learning, and a deep respect for the impact of healthcare on people’s lives.
