Israel’s Stance on Hostage Exchange and Prisoner Releases
The Israeli government has stated that it will not begin releasing Palestinian prisoners and detainees set to be freed under the Gaza hostage exchange until it confirms that all released captives are back in Israel. This decision comes as the deadline for the exchange approaches, with Monday being the final day for the release of hostages held by Hamas.
This position is in line with the terms of a peace plan proposed by former US President Donald Trump, which sets a specific timeframe for the exchange. The plan aims to bring stability to the region and includes provisions for the release of both hostages and Palestinian prisoners.
UN Peacekeepers Injured in Lebanon
In southern Lebanon, a United Nations peacekeeper was injured after an Israeli drone dropped a grenade near a UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) position. This incident marks the third such attack in recent weeks, according to UNIFIL. The organization condemned the action, stating that it represents a serious violation of resolution 1701 and raises concerns about the safety of peacekeepers.
Earlier this month, multiple grenades dropped by an Israeli drone had landed near peacekeepers who were clearing rubble from the war fought last year between Hezbollah and Israel. In another similar incident, four grenades were dropped near UNIFIL positions. While Israel acknowledged these incidents, it claimed there was no “intentional fire” directed at the UN peacekeepers.
Netanyahu Warns of Ongoing Threats
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that the fight is not over, emphasizing that Israel’s “enemies” are plotting further attacks. During a televised address, he highlighted the historic return of hostages and praised the achievements of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). However, he also stressed that the conflict is not yet resolved, and there are many security challenges ahead.
Netanyahu reiterated that the campaign has not ended and that some of Israel’s enemies are trying to rehabilitate themselves to attack again. He emphasized that Israel is prepared to deal with these threats.
US Vice President Vance on Middle East Stability
US Vice President JD Vance emphasized the need for “consistent leverage and pressure” to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East. He assured that the 200 US troops deployed to Israel would not be involved in combat but would monitor the ceasefire in Gaza.
Vance also mentioned that the presence of US troops would help ensure that the ceasefire is maintained and that Hamas does not attack innocent Israelis. He clarified that the deployment is not intended to involve troops on the ground in Gaza or Israel.
Palestinian Authority’s Role in Post-War Gaza
The Palestinian Authority (PA) has expressed readiness to work with US President Donald Trump and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair in their efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and rebuild the region. Under Trump’s plan, the PA would eventually govern the Gaza Strip once certain reforms are completed.
Hussein al-Sheikh, a senior official, confirmed the PA’s willingness to collaborate with Trump, Blair, and other partners to consolidate the ceasefire, facilitate aid, and begin recovery and reconstruction efforts.
Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
Amjad Shawa, head of the Palestinian NGO Network (PNGO), described the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, where people urgently need shelter, clean water, and medical care. He highlighted the ongoing challenge of collecting bodies buried under rubble and the urgent need for shelter materials, tents, blankets, and mattresses as winter approaches.
Shawa also warned about the destruction of water infrastructure and the high number of non-functional health facilities. He estimated that around 1.5 million Palestinians have lost their homes, and without a coordinated reconstruction plan, displacement could last for years.
Israel’s Plan to Destroy Hamas Tunnels
Israel has announced plans to destroy all remaining underground tunnels in the Gaza Strip used by Hamas fighters. Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the operation will be carried out directly by the Israeli military under US supervision. These tunnels have been a significant concern for Israel, as they have allowed for surprise attacks.
Pro-Palestinian Rallies in Australia
Tens of thousands of people participated in pro-Palestinian rallies across Australian cities, including Sydney. Organizers reported large crowds carrying Palestinian flags and wearing keffiyeh scarves. The protests were part of a broader movement supporting the Palestinian cause.
Gaza Peace Summit in Egypt
Egypt will host an international peace summit for Gaza in Sharm el-Sheikh on Monday. The event will include a signing ceremony for the Gaza agreement. Leaders from more than 20 countries are expected to attend, including French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
Hamas has stated that it will not attend the summit, as it has acted through Qatari and Egyptian mediators during talks. However, the summit will be co-chaired by US President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi.
Hostage Release Expected on Monday
Hamas has indicated that the release of hostages will begin on Monday as agreed. According to a top official, the prisoner exchange is set to start on Monday morning, with no new developments reported. Israel and the United States have also expressed expectations for the hostage release to take place on Monday.
