NASA has released striking photographs of a flow of molten lava on the snowy peak of Mount Etna.
Sitting in Sicily, Mount Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in Europe and this new geological formation has attracted tourists, skiers, and hikers.
On February 12, a volcanic eruption took place, and Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology had forecasted just five days earlier that Etna was displaying “signs of unrest above its background level.”
“The Operational Land Imager on the Landsat 8 satellite captured this image of an ongoing eruption on February 13. The natural-color scene is overlaid with an infrared signal to highlight the lava’s heat signature on Etna’s snowy slopes,” NASA stated on its Earth Observatory website.
NASA officials are advising spectators to exercise prudence and maintain a safe distance from the lava flows.
