Strengthening Nigeria’s Healthcare Ecosystem

In response to the growing trend of medical tourism, health sector stakeholders in Nigeria have emphasized the need for a robust healthcare ecosystem that can support the integration of advanced surgical technologies. Among these technologies, robotic-assisted surgery has emerged as a promising solution to improve patient outcomes.

Robotic-assisted surgery offers several advantages, including enhanced precision, reduced blood loss, and shorter recovery times for patients undergoing complex procedures. However, the successful implementation of such technology requires more than just high-end equipment. It demands skilled personnel, ongoing training, reliable infrastructure, and strong collaboration among healthcare institutions, government bodies, and the private sector.

This call for a stronger healthcare system was echoed during the launch of robotic surgery services at Redeemer’s Health Village (RHV), a faith-based 300-bed multispecialty hospital established by the Redeemed Christian Church of God. The hospital partnered with RoboMed Global Inc., a U.S.-based organization, to introduce robotic surgery services and establish a training academy aimed at equipping Nigerian professionals with the necessary skills to perform and support advanced procedures.

Government Support and Strategic Vision

The Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Salako, commended the initiative and highlighted its alignment with Nigeria’s health transformation agenda. He noted that robotic surgery would contribute to improving health outcomes and unlocking the healthcare value chain. Additionally, it supports the government’s goal of reversing the direction of medical tourism from outbound to inbound, thereby preserving foreign exchange resources.

Salako also praised the structured training program introduced by RHV, which aims to ensure that surgeons are appropriately certified to practice robotic surgery safely and effectively. “This is a commendable pathway to update the clinical skills of our surgeons for new medical technology,” he said.

He urged all stakeholders in the healthcare sector to collaborate in building a fully functional health system that is equitable, affordable, and capable of meeting the needs of every Nigerian.

Expert Perspectives on Building an Ecosystem

Former Minister of State for Health, Olorunnimbe Mamora, emphasized that while the introduction of robotic machines is a positive step, the real challenge lies in building a comprehensive ecosystem around this technology. He outlined the essential components required for optimal adoption, including well-trained medical professionals, IT specialists, maintenance support, quality assurance systems, and sustainable financing.

Mamora stressed the importance of partnerships, stating that no single institution can achieve this alone. “Success will depend upon collaboration built on trust, shared purpose, and long-term commitment,” he said.

Investment and Training Pathways

Dr. Adedamola Dada, CEO of RHV, revealed that the facility invested $4 million into the robotic services. One of the primary goals of the initiative is to create pathways for training robotic surgeons within Nigeria. The RHV Robotic Academy, set to begin on October 22, will offer a five-stage training pathway that includes didactic lectures, dry and wet laboratory training, human training, and examination and credentialing.

Dada emphasized the importance of creating a pipeline of local talent rather than relying on foreign expertise. “We want to create a pipeline so that we can then have these robotic surgeons all over the country,” he said.

The cost of robotic surgeries at RHV is expected to be about five percent of the cost in the U.S. and Europe, making it an affordable option for patients across West Africa.

Expanding Access to Advanced Care

Prof. Obi Davies-Ekwenna, CEO of RoboMed Global, explained that the partnership with RHV aims to provide patients with access to world-class surgical services without the need to travel abroad. The organization seeks to expand access to advanced care by establishing sustainable robotic surgery programs, training local surgeons, and strengthening healthcare systems across West Africa.

Faith-Based Commitment to Innovation

Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the RCCG General Overseer, expressed his support for the robotic surgery initiative, highlighting its potential to train Nigerian surgeons, support research, and reduce the need for Nigerians to seek advanced medical treatment abroad. Represented by Pastor Joseph Olayemi, Adeboye emphasized the role of knowledge, science, and technology in preserving life and alleviating suffering when used responsibly and compassionately.
