Southern California Man Charged After Woman’s Fentanyl-Related Death in 2021

A Simi Valley man has been federally indicted in connection with a 2021 fatal overdose, following a multi-year investigation by local and federal authorities.

On April 11, Michael McDevitt, who is 43 years old, was taken into custody by agents from the Ventura County Fentanyl Task Force and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Authorities have charged him with distributing fentanyl that led to someone’s death, as per an indictment filed against him.

The case originates from an event in September 2021 when McDevitt and another individual brought an unconscious woman to a Ventura County Fire Department facility.

Efforts to save her life did not succeed, and the woman was declared deceased, according to officials.

The medical examiner subsequently concluded that the woman passed away due to severe fentanyl poisoning.

Authorities searched McDevitt’s home which led to the discovery of fentanyl. In the months that followed, detectives gathered evidence, interviewed witnesses and collected surveillance footage and digital data.

Eventually, charges were brought against McDevitt under California legislation, alleging he provided the fentanyl responsible for the woman’s demise. He was taken into custody in September 2024 and subsequently freed on bond.

The matter was ultimately handed over to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, resulting in a federal indictment being announced last February, with the state charges subsequently dropped.

McDevitt is presently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center located in downtown.
