Understanding the Significance of Labor Day
Labor Day is more than just a long weekend; it serves as a tribute to the hard work and dedication of workers across the nation. This holiday highlights the contributions of the American labor movement and provides an opportunity to reflect on the ongoing challenges and possibilities within today’s workforce, especially in California’s diverse communities.
California, with its status as the fourth-largest economy in the world, is home to 4.2 million small businesses. Among these, nearly 290,000 are Black or African American-owned businesses. These enterprises play a crucial role in driving local economies and fostering community growth. However, despite their importance, they often face significant hurdles that impact their success.
Small businesses in California employ 7 million people, yet disparities persist. Recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey reveals that the unemployment rate for Black and African Americans in California was 10.7% in June 2025, compared to a statewide rate of 5.4% during the same period. These disparities can often be attributed to limited access to resources, support, and opportunities.
The Role of the EDD in Supporting Workers and Businesses
The Employment Development Department (EDD) plays a vital role in the state’s workforce development system. They provide free resources to help job seekers find meaningful employment, support businesses in hiring qualified employees, and deliver essential benefits to workers when they need them most.
This Labor Day, the EDD reminds Californians that whether you’re seeking employment, building your career, or managing a business, you don’t have to navigate these challenges alone. Here are six key ways the EDD can support you:
