Strong Performances and Returning Stars Define 2025 Amarillo High School Football Season
The 2024 season was a standout year for high school football teams in the Amarillo area. Several squads made deep playoff runs, with West Plains and Gruver both reaching the state semifinals in December. While the Wolves fell just short of the state title, both teams are set to return a significant number of starters from their successful 2024 campaigns.
With many talented players returning across the Texas Panhandle, the upcoming 2025 season is expected to be another strong one. The success of the Wolves and Greyhounds last year led to multiple players earning spots on the 2025 Amarillo Globe-News Preseason Super Team. Below is a detailed look at the top performers and key players who will shape the season ahead.
Superlatives: Recognizing Excellence
Most Valuable Player:
Reid Macon, a senior quarterback from West Plains, was named the Most Valuable Player. As a junior, he threw for 3,528 yards and 38 touchdowns while also rushing for 576 yards and 15 scores. His performance helped lead the Wolves to the state semifinals.
Offensive Player of the Year:
Briggs Satterfield, a senior from Gruver, took home the Offensive Player of the Year award. He passed for 2,935 yards and 37 touchdowns as a junior, adding 984 yards and 18 rushing scores to help the Greyhounds reach the state semifinals.
Defensive Player of the Year:
Krush Johnson, a senior defensive tackle from Tascosa, was honored as the Defensive Player of the Year. He recorded 106 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, six sacks, and nine quarterback pressures during the 2024 season.
Utility Player of the Year:
Darien Lewis, a senior from Palo Duro, was recognized as the Utility Player of the Year. He played both as a wide receiver and safety, catching 47 passes for 532 yards and five touchdowns while also scoring 10 rushing touchdowns.
Coach of the Year:
Adam Cummings, the head coach of West Plains, was named Coach of the Year. He led the Wolves to the Class 4A Division I state semifinals, where they nearly upset the eventual state champion Celina.
Offense: Key Players to Watch
Quarterbacks:
Jett Lopez, a senior from Amarillo High, set two school records as a junior, throwing for 3,007 yards and 36 touchdowns while adding 10 rushing scores.
Running Backs:
Slade Russell, a junior from West Plains, rushed for 1,697 yards and 24 touchdowns as a sophomore. Slayden Dickinson, a senior from Canadian, was named Newcomer of the Year after rushing for 1,629 yards and 20 touchdowns.
Wide Receivers:
Carlos Estrada, a junior from Perryton, caught 71 passes for 1,028 yards and eight touchdowns. Caden Armes, a senior from Panhandle, tallied 33 catches for 722 yards and 11 scores. Brock Butler, a senior from Gruver, was a standout on both offense and defense, recording 84 tackles and 38 receptions.
Offensive Linemen:
Keegan Collins, a senior from West Plains, was a key player on the offensive line. Jaxon Lawler, a junior from Bushland, was named Newcomer of the Year. Jack Sinclair and Gavan Brookshire, both seniors from Panhandle, were named to the First Team All-District OL.
Utility Players:
Broxton Robinson, a senior from Panhandle, had an impressive season, passing for 2,090 yards and 20 touchdowns while rushing for 1,214 yards and 23 scores.
Defense: Standout Performers
Defensive Linemen:
Jackson Graves, a senior from Wheeler, recorded 107 tackles and 18 sacks as a junior. Riggs Pennington, a senior from Canadian, tallied 98 tackles and 22 tackles for loss. Dryden Prichard, a senior from Highland Park, added 58 tackles and seven sacks.
Linebackers:
Keima’j Barnes, a senior from Palo Duro, totaled 174 tackles and six sacks. Jacob Mora, a senior from Childress, recorded 126 tackles and two interceptions. Mark Haygood, a senior from Canadian, had 175 tackles and 35 tackles for loss. Drayven Patton, a senior from Randall, was named Co-Defensive MVP.
Defensive Backs:
Kane White-Tinsley, a senior from West Plains, recorded 55 tackles and nine interceptions. Garrett Ashurst, a senior from Wheeler, tallied 108 tackles and six interceptions. Boston Ladd, a senior from West Plains, was named Utility Player of the Year. Zach Bryant, a sophomore from West Texas, transferred from Canadian and recorded 91 tackles and three interceptions.
Utility Players:
Victor Flores, a senior from Gruver, was named Defensive MVP after tallying 127 tackles and seven forced fumbles.
