The best budget European ski resort – with 89p pints and just a three-hour flight from UK

Ski trips can be notoriously expensive – but one hidden gem resort has been crowned Europe’s best for budget skiing with its £30 day passes and 89p pints.

In a recent study, airport transfers experts at hoppa ranked the top 10 most affordable ski destinations in Europe by analysing a range of factors – from the price of a weekday adult ski pass and lift pass costs, to average snowfall and transfer time.

Emerging as the most budget-friendly resort is Bulgaria’s Bansko, with a weekday adult ski pass cost just £28.63 – the cheapest in Europe.

The pass is not only cheaper than half the price of most ski resorts ranked by hoppa, it’s a third of the price of Switzerland’s Zermatt – the most expensive ski resort in the continent with weekday passes costing £89.42.

Ranking as the second and third most affordable ski resorts in Europe are Tignes and Cervinia, with weekday adult ski pass costs of £49.46 and £51.19, respectively.

Taking the fourth spot is Méribel, with weekday adult ski passes costing £51.97, while Alpe d’Huez rounded the top five with ski passes priced at £55.53.

Located at the foot of Bulgaria’s Pirin Mountains, Bansko is the country’s premier winter sports destination, offering diverse slopes for all levels of skiers at a fraction of the cost.

The resort is a two-hour drive from Sofia Airport, with direct buses departing regularly from Sofia Vasil Levski Monument and arriving at Bansko New Station station.

And with one-way Ryanair flights from London Stansted to Sofia costing just €16 (£14), it lays a fantastic foundation for a low-cost ski holiday.

Although it’s better known for being an affordable getaway for ski lovers, Bansko is also well-suited to beginner and intermediate skiers and snowboarders.

With just 48km of piste and 14 lifts taking guests around the resort, Bansko is not the most challenging, making it an ideal setting for first-timers who want to avoid the crowds and go at their own pace.

The resort itself oozes traditional Bulgarian charm, featuring an ensemble of old  stone buildings, terracotta tiled roofs, and quaint cobbled streets, all set against the backdrop of the visually striking Pirin Mountains.

In the heart of the picturesque town, visitors are spoilt for choice for food and drink, with almost 150 restaurants and bars offering vibrant apres ski experiences laying in wait.

Beer-lovers are in for a real treat, too, as the average cost of a pint in Bansko is just 90p, a stark contrast to other European ski resorts where drinks can cost several pounds.

As for accommodation, Bansko truly is the bargain gift that keeps on giving, as the average price for a night’s stay at a three-star hotel is £57, according to Travel and Tour World.

For those seeking something a little more upmarket, the four-star Hotel Tanne offers nightly rates of £159 throughout January, and boasts amenities such as an on-site spa, hot mineral pool, sauna, and a Viennese lounge.

Away from Bulgaria’s budget resort, there’s one European country where your money stretches much further.

A raft of Italian resorts have once again made the top ten best value ski resorts in Europe – for both adults and family breaks – in the Post Office Travel Money annual ski resort report.

Bardonecchia, in the country’s north west, ranked the cheapest out of all of the 32 resorts analysed for adults, while Passo Tonale, in the Trentino region, secured first place in family ski resort rankings for the second year in a row.

The study, a collaboration between the Post Office and Crystal Ski Holidays, compared the price of lift passes, ski equipment, tuition, meals and drinks to work out how much a week away would cost at each resort.
