President Tinubu Endorses Media Sector Reforms

President Bola Tinubu recently endorsed a series of requests from the Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE) aimed at revitalizing the struggling media sector in the country. He emphasized the importance of responsible journalism and warned against the dangers of misinformation, which could threaten national unity and democratic stability.

In his address during the 21st All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC), organized by the NGE at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Tinubu acknowledged the challenges faced by the media industry. He highlighted the need for corporate tax relief, Value Added Tax (VAT) exemptions, and affordable financing to support the sector’s survival. Additionally, he mentioned the establishment of development grants for digitization and the repeal of laws that hinder press freedom.

Tinubu also encouraged editors to act as gatekeepers with patriotism and fairness. He stated that while criticism of government is necessary, it must not come at the expense of national unity or the country’s global image. He recalled the initial backlash against his economic reforms, such as foreign exchange liberalization and the removal of arbitrage, but maintained that these measures were essential for long-term economic recovery.

Economic Challenges and Media Distress

The President of the NGE, Mr. Eze Anaba, raised concerns about the deteriorating financial state of the Nigerian media. He pointed out that many organizations were on the brink of collapse due to rising operational costs. The cost of newsprint had skyrocketed, making it difficult for newsrooms to sustain their operations. Anaba warned that the inability of media houses to retain journalists posed a threat to democratic accountability.

To address these issues, the NGE proposed several measures, including corporate tax relief for media companies, VAT exemptions on essential inputs, and low-interest loan windows through the Bank of Industry. They also called for a Media Innovation Fund to support online platforms and data journalism. Anaba stressed that these interventions were crucial for safeguarding democracy, stating that when the press thrives, democracy breathes.

Role of Editors in Shaping Democracy

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, who delivered the keynote address, reminded editors of their critical role in shaping the nation’s democratic future. He emphasized the importance of objectivity in journalism, noting that it is both an epistemic and ethical principle. Uzodimma urged editors to be catalysts rather than bystanders in the 2027 elections, highlighting their influence in shaping national perception.

He also addressed the issue of public mistrust in the media, citing the 2023 Edelman Trust Barometer, which found that nearly half of Nigerians distrust the media. Uzodimma warned that editorial choices have significant consequences, affecting voter confidence and democratic resilience. He called for an “objectivity of responsibility” anchored on accuracy and verification, rather than speed or sensationalism.

Government Commitment to Press Freedom

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, echoed the praise for the government’s commitment to press freedom. He noted that this was the first time a sitting President attended an NGE conference, calling it a profound acknowledgment of the fourth estate. Idris highlighted the administration’s efforts to strengthen infrastructure, education, and healthcare through a modernized tax regime.

He also assured editors that requests for media tax exemptions would be addressed in due course. Idris emphasized the importance of responsible reporting, stating that the best editor is the one who knows what not to publish. He urged the media to tell the Nigerian story with balance, truth, and an unshakable belief in the country’s future.

Conclusion

The discussions at the ANEC underscored the critical role of the media in sustaining democracy and fostering national cohesion. President Tinubu’s endorsement of the NGE’s proposals signals a commitment to supporting the media sector. As the country moves forward, the collaboration between the government and the media will be essential in ensuring transparency, accountability, and the promotion of a shared national destiny.
