UK pledges new air defense system to Ukraine — PM Keir Starmer

The Gravehawk air defense system, roughly the same size as a cargo container, is designed for launching air-to-air missiles that are already used by the Ukrainian military.

This will boost Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, ensuring protection for cities, military personnel, and key infrastructure from ongoing Russian artillery fire.

Two prototype models were tested in Ukraine in September 2024, with plans for 15 more units to be delivered in 2025.

At a press conference, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the delivery of 150 artillery guns made in the UK that need to be shipped quickly.

The artillery barrels will be manufactured by the UK-based company BAE Systems, marking its first major production for Ukraine in nearly 20 years under a 61 million pound contract.

Stamer’s visit to Ukraine on January 16 was his first since becoming Prime Minister in July 2024. He and Volodymyr Zelenskyy agreed on a historic 100-year partnership that covers defense, science, energy, and trade.

The agreement aims to enhance the partnership between the UK and Ukraine in terms of defense and ensure ongoing military backing.

Signed a 10-year security agreement, extending until Ukraine’s membership in NATO, with potential for renewal.
