The Mystery of Alien Silence
One of the most profound questions in science is: if there’s life beyond Earth, why haven’t we heard from it yet? A recent theory suggests that the answer might be more straightforward than we imagine. Dr. Robin Corbet, an astrophysicist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, posits that extraterrestrial civilizations may have simply lost interest in trying to find us.
In a new paper, he argues that alien civilizations are only slightly more technologically advanced than humans. This limited advancement means they’ve reached the upper limit of what their technology can achieve, leading them to give up on exploration and lose interest in contacting other species.
“In the mundane perspective, where other civilizations are not that much more advanced, a limit to exploration would arise,” said Dr. Corbet. He also highlights Proxima Centauri b, a planet located 4 light years away, as a potential candidate for hosting life. However, with current spacecraft speeds, it would take around 100,000 years to reach it.
For decades, popular culture has portrayed aliens as highly advanced beings capable of interstellar travel and communication. Films like “ET” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” suggest they possess technology far beyond our understanding. These depictions have fueled the assumption that extraterrestrials could easily send messages across the galaxy using powerful beacons or robotic probes.
However, according to Dr. Corbet, this might not be the case. He compares the technological level of aliens to an “iPhone 42 rather than an iPhone 17.” Their technology may not include significant advancements such as harnessing electricity or relying on unknown physical laws. Even if they do have a powerful beacon transmitter, there may not be enough motivation to operate it for millions or billions of years until someone notices.
Moreover, large-scale colonization or exploration of the galaxy would require substantial benefits to outweigh the costs, he adds.
The Existence of Aliens
If you ask an astronomer whether aliens exist, the likely answer is yes. The universe is incredibly vast, and we’ve only explored a tiny fraction of it. Given this, it’s statistically improbable that life exists only on Earth. Erik Zackrisson, an astrophysicist at Uppsala University in Sweden, estimates there are 70 quintillion planets in the universe—7 followed by 20 zeros.
Despite this, some skeptics point to the lack of evidence for extraterrestrial civilizations, a problem known as the Fermi paradox. In essence, the paradox questions why, if there is so much life in the universe, we haven’t found any evidence of it yet.
Dr. Corbet’s theory, called the “radically mundane” theory, offers an explanation for the Fermi paradox. He suggests that while other civilizations may be more advanced than us, they aren’t far enough ahead to make their presence easily detectable.
“The Fermi paradox may be explained if the galaxy contains a modest number of technological civilizations, with technology levels that, while more advanced than contemporary Earth, are nowhere near the ‘super-science’ levels that could result in readily detectable astro-engineering,” he concludes in his paper.
Alternative Explanations
There are several possible answers to the Fermi paradox. One theory suggests that extraterrestrial life might be too scared of humans to make contact. Dr. Gordon Gallup, a biopsychologist at the University of Albany, proposed in a 2022 paper that if intelligent life exists elsewhere, they might view humans as extremely dangerous. This fear could explain why there’s no evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence.
Another theory claims that aliens may be so advanced that they have transcended to a different realm, making them unrecognizable to us.
Regardless of the answer, the possibility of communicating with alien life remains a tantalizing prospect. On Earth, scientists have already attempted to send messages toward other solar systems using radio or light signals. According to Mark Buchanan, a physicist and writer in the UK, the best way to make contact with alien life would be to send light signals because they travel at the speed of light.
“And there are many ways to send signals of a kind that do not get changed by any natural process, so another civilization would see them as coming from an intelligence,” he told the Daily Mail.
