Political Shifts in Nigeria: Resignations and New Alliances

A series of significant political developments have unfolded in Nigeria, with several key figures making notable moves that could reshape the country’s political landscape. These changes come amid a period of internal strife within the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), as well as growing alignments with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Governor Diri Resigns from PDP

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, made headlines by resigning from the PDP along with his entire cabinet. This move followed weeks of speculation about his intentions, which he confirmed on Wednesday by leaving with approximately 17 members of the PDP caucus in the House of Assembly. The governor announced his resignation at a State Executive Council meeting held at Government House, Yenagoa.

Alongside Diri were two members from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and Speaker, Mr. Abraham Ingobere. Although there was speculation that Diri would join the APC, he did not explicitly state his next political move. In his address, Diri expressed gratitude to his supporters and emphasized his commitment to building a stronger Bayelsa State and Nigeria.

Ben Bruce Joins APC

Business magnate and former Senator for Bayelsa East, Ben Bruce, also left the PDP to join the APC. His decision was rooted in his long-standing relationship with President Bola Tinubu and his belief in the president’s vision for Nigeria. Bruce highlighted the importance of reforms and their role in stabilizing the economy and improving infrastructure.

He stated, “I have known President Bola Ahmed Tinubu since 1998; a man of courage, conviction, and results. For the first time, Nigeria has a leader who truly understands finance and is laying the foundation for lasting prosperity.”

PDP Expresses Disappointment

The PDP expressed disappointment over the defection of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah to the APC. This development has further exacerbated the crisis within the party, as the chairmen of the party in Abia and Imo states were suspended for allegedly plotting to circumvent the national convention scheduled for November 16.

National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Debo Ologunagba, acknowledged the challenges facing the party but emphasized the need to focus on the Nigerian people rather than individual actions. He stated, “We are going to go to Ibadan, coming out victoriously with a brand new National Working Committee that will continue to steer the affairs of the party.”

Dickson Remains Loyal to PDP

Despite the resignation of his home governor, former Bayelsa State governor, Senator Seriake Dickson, reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP. He criticized the decision of Diri, stating that it was unfortunate given the party’s historical significance in Bayelsa and the Ijaw nation.

Dickson emphasized the importance of maintaining principles and values, stating, “My life and values about constancy, consistency, principles, honour, and loyalty to people and causes have not changed.” He called on all in Bayelsa to remain calm and ensure peaceful politicking leading up to the 2027 elections.

PDP Appoints Ben Obi as Convention Secretary

In response to the defection of Mbah, the PDP appointed Senator Ben Obi as Secretary of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) for the 2025 PDP Elective National Convention. This appointment aims to ensure the successful conduct of the convention and the overall progress of the party.

The National Working Committee (NWC) commended the efforts of the NCOC under the chairmanship of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State. They urged all leaders and members to remain united and focused on the party’s future.

These developments highlight the dynamic nature of Nigerian politics and the ongoing shifts in allegiances and strategies among key political players. As the PDP works to reposition itself, the APC continues to gain momentum, signaling potential changes in the country’s political dynamics.
