PDP’s Zoning Strategy and Political Implications

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has made significant decisions regarding its 2027 presidential ticket, with a focus on regional zoning. The party’s 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting resolved to zone the 2027 presidential ticket to the South, which opens the door for Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and other southerners to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the next election. This decision aligns with the party’s broader strategy of ensuring internal cohesion and positioning itself for future electoral success.

The NEC also upheld the current National Working Committee (NWC) zoning formula for the November elective convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, and confirmed Umar Damagum as the substantive National Chairman. This move was seen as a step toward stabilizing the party and ensuring continuity in leadership ahead of the 2025 Elective National Convention, scheduled for November 15 to 16, 2025.

Reactions and Political Dynamics

Loyalists of the 2023 Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, including Obidient Movement National coordinator Tanko Yunusa, have expressed that Obi needs more time to reflect before deciding on his next political move. This comes amid discussions about Obi potentially returning to the PDP fold to pursue his presidential ambitions in 2027. However, the party’s recent zoning arrangement may influence this decision, as it appears to favor southern candidates.

On the other hand, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, criticized the PDP’s zoning strategy, claiming that the party is destined for defeat in 2027 regardless of who they field as a presidential candidate. He argued that President Bola Tinubu’s policies and performance resonate with Nigerians across the country, making it unlikely for the PDP to challenge his re-election.

Zoning has long been a key factor in shaping the political landscape of the PDP. In 2015, northern members opposed former President Goodluck Jonathan, insisting the presidential ticket should return to their region. Their revolt contributed to the PDP’s defeat by the APC. A similar situation occurred in 2023 when several governors opposed Atiku Abubakar’s candidacy, arguing that after President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight years in power, the South deserved consideration.

Internal Struggles and Party Resilience

The PDP has faced repeated disputes over the zoning of the presidential ticket or NWC positions, leading to internal crises. Following the removal of Senator Iyorchia Ayu as National Chairman in 2023 by a court ruling, North Central leaders demanded to fill the position, but their request was denied. This led to the defection of key figures like former Senate President David Mark and Senator Dino Melaye to the opposition coalition, African Democratic Congress.

Despite these challenges, the PDP has shown resilience. The 44-member zoning committee, chaired by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, presented its report to the 102nd NEC. The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, stated that the decision followed the presentation of the report and that the NEC expressed satisfaction with the party’s preparedness for the 2025 National Convention.

Commitment to Democracy and Unity

The NEC commended the efforts of PDP governors, the Board of Trustees, NWC, and other party organs toward the success of the 2025 National Convention. It also condemned the APC’s use of state-backed intimidation, manipulation, and coercion during recent bye-elections, calling it a threat to democracy.

Umar Damagum, the newly confirmed National Chairman, emphasized the need for unity, discipline, and inclusivity within the party. He stressed that the PDP must remain focused on restoring hope, equity, and justice to the Nigerian people.

Future Prospects and Challenges

With the new zoning arrangement, the path now seems clearer for Makinde, Obi, and other southerners interested in the 2027 presidential ticket. However, the party faces significant challenges in rebuilding trust and positioning itself as a credible alternative to the APC.

The PDP Governors Forum Chairman, Bala Mohammed, highlighted the party’s efforts to win back the trust of Nigerians. He noted that all remaining issues from previous congresses had been resolved, and the party was working well to ensure unity ahead of the 2027 elections.

Adolphus Wabara, the BoT chairman, emphasized the importance of three key principles: unity and progress, sacrifice, and reconciliation with inclusion. He urged party members to embrace these values to succeed in 2027.

Conclusion

As the PDP prepares for the 2027 elections, the party’s zoning strategy and internal dynamics will play a crucial role in determining its future. While challenges remain, the party remains committed to democracy, unity, and the restoration of hope for the Nigerian people. The coming months will be critical in shaping the party’s trajectory and its ability to reclaim power in the next general election.
