A Life of Intellectual Excellence and Global Influence

For three decades, Biodun Jeyifo, affectionately known as BJ, was a global academic figure. He taught at prestigious institutions such as Oberlin, Cornell, Harvard, Cambridge, Berlin, and Beijing. His intellectual contributions left an indelible mark on colleagues and students alike, who often marveled at his sharp mind and profound insights. Despite his international acclaim, BJ always made it clear that he hailed from Ibadan—a city that shaped his early life and education. Ibadan is not just a place; it is a symbol of intellectual rigor and cultural richness. Its university, while sometimes debated in terms of its global standing, has produced some of the most influential scholars in African literature.

BJ was more than an academic; he was an ambassador of Ibadan’s intellectual legacy. His travels took him across continents, especially to the Ivy League universities in the United States, where he shared his vast knowledge and deep thinking. Every year, he returned to Ibadan, drawn by the warmth of its sun, the familiar scents, and the people who had nurtured him. It was in this city that our paths crossed, and I came to know him through his close friendship with Professor Femi Osofisan. Their bond was both personal and professional, blending scholarship with a deep sense of camaraderie. Together, they created a unique intellectual environment that produced groundbreaking works in literature and criticism.

BJ’s eyes were often described as piercing, reflecting his sharp intellect and rigorous approach to scholarship. What set him apart was his ability to think deeply and critically, often delving into complex ideas that required careful analysis. His work was influenced by the rich cultural and linguistic landscape of Nigeria, where he was one of many distinguished literary critics, including Professors Abiola Irele, Dan Izevbaye, and Ben Elugbe. All of them were products of the same intellectual axis, using their native languages as a foundation for their academic pursuits.

Despite his health challenges, BJ remained resilient. The rejuvenating energy of Ibadan helped him sustain his academic endeavors, allowing him to continue his work in North America. Even while abroad, his heart remained in Nigeria. He maintained a weekly column in a Nigerian newspaper, where he offered insightful commentary on social and political issues. Through this platform, he served as a bridge between the government and the public, providing guidance and highlighting critical concerns.

BJ was a prolific writer, but his prose was dense and challenging. Reading his essays required patience and multiple readings to fully grasp their depth. His writing reflected the complexity of his thoughts, often reaching for lofty philosophical ideas. One memorable day, we embarked on a journey to visit Wole Soyinka in his hometown of Ijegba. Our conversation during the trip ranged from literature to the realities of aging. We laughed about the small indignities of growing older, each of us revealing our own quirks. For BJ, the signs of aging were becoming more visible, a subtle reminder of the fragility of the human body.

At 80, BJ deserved a celebration, and his friends organized a birthday party at Odunlade’s Art Gallery in Ibadan. The event honored his remarkable career, activism, and kindness. Speakers praised his contributions to academia and society, highlighting his compassion and dedication. One particularly poignant moment came when Prof Adenike Osofisan addressed BJ, urging him to take better care of himself after years of selfless service to others. Her words resonated deeply, serving as a reminder to all of us about the importance of balance.

The party was filled with joy, and the music brought out the best in BJ. As the band played “Easy Motion,” he danced with energy and enthusiasm, surrounded by friends and colleagues. It was a fitting farewell, a celebration of a life well-lived. BJ’s last dance was a testament to his enduring spirit and love for life.

Adieu, BJ! Your legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
