A New Chapter for Arthur Okonkwo
Arthur Okonkwo, the Wrexham goalkeeper, recently made his debut for the Nigerian national team at the Unity Cup. In an exclusive interview with the Super Eagles Channel, he shared insights into his decision to represent Nigeria and the legacy he hopes to leave behind.
The Journey to the Super Eagles
Okonkwo reflected on how it felt when he finally became part of the Super Eagles after watching from afar. He explained that the journey began last summer when he had conversations with the manager and goalkeeper coach, who expressed their interest in him. These discussions were positive, and since then, they have been working to facilitate his switch from England to Nigeria.
When the moment arrived and the goalkeeper coach informed him of his selection for the camp, Okonkwo was filled with excitement. His first calls were to his father and mother, as everyone was thrilled and proud. He emphasized that being given the opportunity to play for his country is an honor, and he has been eager for this moment for a long time.
Building Trust with Nigerian Fans
Nigerian fans often connect deeply with players who wear the badge with pride. Okonkwo spoke about the relationship he hopes to build with them. He believes the most important aspect is trust. While it takes time, he wants to become a consistent performer for the country and someone the fans can rely on in goal for every game.
To achieve this, he needs to integrate with the team, learn the way they play, and connect with defenders, attackers, and everyone on the pitch. He acknowledged that building trust with the fans is a process, but he is committed to working towards it.
Handling Emotions from the Fans
Okonkwo is ready to deal with the emotions of Nigerians, especially after bad games. He understands that fans have feelings towards every game and that these feelings are shared by the players. He believes that being connected to the fans and feeling their emotions will help him play for the badge even more and fight for the country.
Nerves Before a Game
Goalkeepers are often seen as the calmest people on the pitch, but Okonkwo revealed what genuinely makes him nervous before a game. He doesn’t get nervous about the game itself, but rather the excitement and anticipation. Waiting for a game or the moments before stepping onto the pitch can make him nervous, especially for bigger games. However, he sees nerves as a natural part of the experience.
Lessons for Young Goalkeepers
If a young Nigerian goalkeeper watches Okonkwo for the very first time, what would he hope stands out about his game? Okonkwo emphasized that making saves is his passion, and he hopes to make many for Nigeria and become a legend. He believes that the joy of his saves is something young goalkeepers can enjoy.
Choosing a Travel Companion
When asked which current Super Eagles player he would enjoy sitting next to on a long trip, Okonkwo mentioned Ryan Alebiosu, someone he has known for a long time. However, if he had to choose someone currently in the team, it would be Chukwueze because he seems fun and funny. Okonkwo enjoys having someone who doesn’t stop talking.
Learning the Songs
Okonkwo confirmed that he is still learning all the songs sung by the fans going to the stadium. He has seen them and is gradually becoming familiar with them.
Unforgettable Memories
Every Nigerian player has an unforgettable Super Eagles memory growing up. For Okonkwo, it was Nigeria winning AFCON in 2013. He watched it with his dad and remembers his father being so happy. At the age of 12, it didn’t mean much to him, but it’s the biggest memory he can recall.
Legacy and Future Goals
Looking ahead, Okonkwo envisions what would make him look back and say he truly left his mark with Nigeria. He believes that winning trophies for his country would be the key. He knows how much Nigerians love football and how important it is to them. Being able to do that for his country, from where he’s from, would be incredible.
Excitement for Upcoming Competitions
With many competitions coming up, Okonkwo is looking forward to the first game and hoping to get a chance to feature. If he has the opportunity to play, that would be amazing. He sees the Unity Cup as a great way to integrate himself into the squad, meet everyone, and understand how they play and do things.
Meeting the Goalkeeping Squad
Okonkwo is also excited to meet the goalkeeping group, including Stanley Nwabali, Amas Obasogie, Francis Uzoho, and Adeleye. He believes that in any country, the goalkeeper union is very important. He can’t wait to meet everyone, start competing with them, and learn from their game as they are all fantastic goalkeepers.
