A Mother’s Outrage Over Her Daughter’s Suspension for Wearing Clear Plastic Retainers

A mother has expressed deep frustration after her 13-year-old daughter was suspended for four days due to a “ridiculous” violation of the school’s uniform policy. Izobella Dawson, a student at Kirk Balk Academy in Barnsley, was sent home for wearing what she described as “invisible earrings” to conceal her ear piercings.

According to the school’s strict ‘no jewellery’ policy, Izobella’s clear plastic retainers were considered a breach of the rules. Despite this, Ms. Dawson claims that her daughter had been wearing them since September 2023 without any issues. She also mentioned that school staff had previously checked her ears and did not raise any concerns about the retainers.

The conflict escalated when Izobella refused to remove the retainers or attend isolation, leading to an initial two-day suspension. This was later extended by two more days after she again refused to comply with the school’s request. The school’s uniform policy explicitly states that “jewellery must not be worn,” with the only exception being a wrist watch (not a smart watch).

Ms. Dawson revealed that more than 90 students had either been placed in isolation or suspended over similar issues in a single week, following a shift in how the rules were enforced. This has raised concerns about the consistency and fairness of the school’s policies.

The mother of two expressed her anger, stating that she is not someone who encourages rule-breaking. However, she emphasized that if a rule cannot be justified or explained, it should not be enforced. Izobella had been wearing the retainers to respect the rules, yet she was taken out of education for doing so.

According to Ms. Dawson, Izobella called the teachers and informed them that her mother did not agree with the isolation. It was then that she was suspended. The teacher reportedly said that the rule had always been in place and that Izobella had just gotten away with it, which Ms. Dawson found unacceptable.

She pointed out that the inconsistency was not just in the rule itself but in its enforcement. For two years, Izobella had never been asked to remove the retainers, and in fact, had been told they were acceptable. This led her to believe that there had been a change in how the rules were applied.

When she asked why Izobella couldn’t wear the retainers, the school responded that it was simply “just the rules.” Ms. Dawson stated that she could not accept this explanation and felt that the school was not willing to acknowledge the changes in enforcement.

Following the initial suspension, Izobella returned to school on September 29 but was suspended again after refusing to remove the retainers and attend the isolation unit. During a meeting with the school, Ms. Dawson was told that the rules had not changed, but there had been inconsistencies in their implementation.

She continued to argue that Izobella was not wearing jewelry, but rather clear plastic retainers that she had used to comply with the rules. She believed that the school should have recognized this and adjusted its approach accordingly.

Izobella eventually returned to school on October 1, but only after removing the retainers from her ears. Ms. Dawson has filed a formal complaint with the school and expects a response within the next 10 days. However, she remains disappointed by the entire situation.

The neighborhood manager added that it was disappointing that no one could explain the reasoning behind the suspension. If the school had provided a health and safety justification, she would have understood. Instead, she felt that the school had failed to communicate effectively and had wasted valuable time and resources.

Izobella missed four days of learning for wearing clear plastic retainers, which she believed were a responsible choice. Ms. Dawson emphasized that she and her daughter both thought they were doing the right thing.

A spokesperson for the Northern Education Trust addressed the situation, stating that the focus is on student wellbeing, high standards, and academic outcomes. They reiterated that the school’s uniform policy is designed to create a calm and orderly environment where students can learn effectively.

They also clarified that no student is ever suspended or excluded solely for wearing jewelry or similar items. When students do wear such items, they are asked to remove them, and most comply without issue. However, if a student refuses, further sanctions may follow.

The spokesperson added that the school’s approach to discipline is appropriate and that incidents have decreased over time. They encouraged parents to reach out directly with any questions or concerns.
