Alaska Airlines is making a big expansion in Oregon this summer, with three new routes and additional flights on existing routes from the state.
This airline will start flying to Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Eugene Airport in Oregon, as well as Rogue Valley International in Oregon. They will also start going to San Diego International Airport. The routes from Houston and San Diego will be daily flights, and the route from Eugene will have two flights a day.
The additional flights will service Portland’s connection with Medford with two new daily flights, bringing the total to four, and Redmond Municipal Airport in Oregon will gain an extra flight per day, going from three to four, beginning May 15.
The airline claims that with the introduction of new flights in May, it will surpass United Airlines to become the largest carrier in Medford, offering as many as 11 daily departures to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Portland, San Diego, and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA).
Alaska Airlines is currently the largest carrier in Portland and Redmond, according to schedule data from the aviation analytics firm Cirium. It ranks third in Eugene behind Southwest Airlines and United.
Our new flights out of Portland, Eugene, and Medford demonstrate our ongoing commitment to linking Oregon with the rest of the U.S., said Kirsten Amrine, vice president of network planning and revenue management at Alaska, in a statement. She calls Portland a ‘second home’ for the airline.
A new network of routes is emerging as Alaska Airways rebuilds its hub in Portland. In December, top executives outlined plans to synchronize flight schedules into four distinct “banks,” or periods when many flights arrive and depart within a tight time frame, such as within one hour of each other. This, they said, will enable more opportunities for passengers to connect through Portland – and ultimately lead to more flights and routes overall at Portland International Airport (PDX).
As a key part of its plan to expand its Portland presence.
Alaska offered 16 percent fewer seats and 22 percent fewer flights in Portland in 2024 compared to 2019, the last full pre-pandemic year, according to Cirium data. Overall, the airline had 2 percent fewer seats and 7 percent fewer flights last year compared to before the pandemic.
From Seattle to Tokyo’s Narita International Airport (NRT) in May, also flying with Hawaiian A330s.
Alaska Airlines will be competing with United on the Portland-Houston route, while also going up against Allegiant Air on the Medford-San Diego route, according to flight schedule data from Cirium.
