In Augusta County, Virginia (WHSV), deputies from the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office started using body-worn cameras following the complete rollout of their Body Worn Camera Project on Tuesday.
The deputies will utilize body cameras throughout their regular tasks. According to Sheriff Donald Smith, this initiative aims at enhancing further transparency within the community.
“This achievement represents the conclusion of a several-year initiative focused on improving transparency, accountability, and operational effectiveness within the Sheriff’s Office. The project’s success underscores the robust cooperation among various County divisions and their leaders, along with sustained backing from our community,” Smith stated.
The project began in July 2024 when it initially received approval, leading to further planning and collaboration efforts. The team will keep working on establishing the necessary infrastructure for complete implementation, which involves setting up charging points and docking facilities.
Dash cams will also be installed across the office’s vehicle fleet within the coming few weeks as part of the concluding phase of this initiative, aiming to “enhance our office’s dedication to openness and community security.”
This is an impressive day for our office and for Augusta County,” Smith stated. “The Body Worn Camera Initiative marks a significant advancement in transparency and community service. My gratitude goes out to each division and person who contributed to making this dream a reality.
