Political Shifts and Party Expansion in Nigeria

The political landscape in Nigeria is witnessing a significant shift as members from opposition parties continue to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This trend has been marked by high-profile defections, strategic rallies, and the introduction of new initiatives aimed at strengthening the party’s position ahead of the 2027 general elections.

One of the most notable developments is the anticipated visit of Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima to Jos, the capital of Plateau State, on October 30. During an APC Strategic Stakeholders meeting held at the Crest Hotel Conference Hall in Plateau, the National Chairman of APC, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, confirmed that the Vice President would officially receive a new set of decampees to the party. This event is expected to be a major milestone for the APC, showcasing its growing influence and appeal across the country.

In Kaduna State, Governor Uba Sani, Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, and APC National Chairman Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda led a grand rally at Murtala Square, welcoming a wave of defectors from opposition parties into the APC. The event, described as a “renewal of unity and victory,” saw the formal defection of several lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other parties. Thousands of supporters attended the rally, celebrating what many considered a “political landslide.”

The rally was marked by vibrant displays of party spirit, with supporters chanting victory songs and waving banners. Among the new members were representatives from various federal constituencies, former senators, local government chairmen, and political figures from the PDP and NNPP. Governor Sani emphasized the inclusive nature of the APC, stating that the party operates as a single family without discrimination. He assured new members that they would enjoy equal opportunities and privileges within the party.

Sani also highlighted the relative peace and harmony in Kaduna State under his administration, noting that there had been no ethno-religious conflicts in the past year. He attributed this to the government’s commitment to equity and inclusiveness, which he said was the foundation of the state’s development.

At the same time, in Kano State, former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Farouk Lawan, officially joined the APC at his ward. The event was presided over by the APC Chairman of Shanono Local Government Area, Iysai Sheme, and witnessed by hundreds of party members and well-wishers. Lawan expressed gratitude to Allah for his move to the APC, describing it as a milestone in his political career. He acknowledged his previous affiliation with the PDP but expressed hope to contribute to the APC’s success in the upcoming elections.

Another significant development came from Bayelsa State, where former acting Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly and APC chieftain, Fini Angaye, commented on the planned defection of Governor Senator Douye Diri to the APC. Angaye stated that this move would bring development and progress to the Ijaw nation, emphasizing the potential benefits of such a shift for the region.

New Initiatives and Future Plans

Prof. Yilwatda also revealed plans for new programmes aimed at keeping the party vibrant and engaging its members. One of these initiatives includes a business challenge offering N100 million to youths and small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The programme will provide financial support to selected individuals, with varying amounts ranging from N1 million to N250,000, depending on the level of impact.

Additionally, the APC has launched a medical outreach programme, which has already seen the involvement of a team from the United States. Local doctors will continue to sustain the initiative until part of next week. Yilwatda also mentioned that new programmes will be unveiled by Monday, with a focus on youth empowerment and economic development.

The trend of launching new initiatives is expected to continue until the 2027 elections, with the aim of maintaining the party’s momentum and appealing to a broader base of Nigerians. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to strengthen the APC’s presence and ensure its dominance in future elections.

Unity and Inclusivity in APC

The recent events have underscored the importance of unity and inclusivity within the APC. Governor Sani reiterated that the party operates as a single family, where old and new members enjoy equal opportunities. This philosophy has been a key factor in attracting defectors and maintaining a cohesive party structure.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, praised Governor Sani’s leadership, highlighting how it has repositioned Kaduna as a model of unity and progress in Northern Nigeria. He noted that the large turnout at the rally reflected the people’s solid support for the APC’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

APC National Chairman, Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, also commended Governor Sani’s role as a bridge-builder who has strengthened the party’s structure across all local governments. He emphasized that the Kaduna rally marked the beginning of strategic political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.

As the APC continues to grow and expand its influence, the focus remains on fostering unity, delivering on promises, and ensuring that the party remains a strong force in Nigerian politics. With ongoing efforts to engage the youth, support economic development, and maintain a cohesive structure, the APC is well-positioned to achieve its goals in the coming years.
