The Tension Builds as Protests Against Nnamdi Kanu’s Detention Loom

The situation in Nigeria is heating up as security forces and protesters prepare for a potential confrontation over the detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Organizers of the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow movement have announced plans to march on the Presidential Villa, aiming to pressure the government to release Kanu from custody. This move comes despite an interim court order issued by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which has sought to prevent protests near sensitive government institutions.

Despite the legal restrictions, the organizers remain determined to proceed with their peaceful demonstration. The Director of Mobilisation for the Take It Back Movement, Damilare Adenola, confirmed that the protest will go ahead as planned in both Abuja and the South-Eastern states. The nationwide demonstration has received support from opposition parties, who are calling for Kanu’s immediate and unconditional release.

Kanu is currently detained on charges including terrorism, treason, and incitement. The Federal Government claims he advocated for Biafra’s independence through inflammatory rhetoric on social media and Radio Biafra. IPOB was declared a terrorist organization in 2017, and Kanu fled Nigeria in 2017 while on bail. He was later re-arrested in Kenya in 2021, sparking controversy and legal debates.

Many view Kanu’s detention as an act of political persecution, while others see it as lawful prosecution. His health condition has also been a point of contention, but a recent medical evaluation declared him fit for trial.

The scheduled date of the protest coincides with the fifth anniversary of the October 2020 #EndSARS protest, which ended in the alleged Lekki massacre. This timing has heightened concerns among security agencies, who are preparing for possible unrest.

Legal Challenges and Organizers’ Response

The Federal High Court in Abuja issued an interim order restraining the organizers from protesting near key government locations, including the Aso Rock Villa, the National Assembly, and the Court of Appeal. The order was granted following an ex parte application filed by the Nigeria Police Force on behalf of the Federal Government.

Counsel to the organizers, Maxwell Opara, acknowledged reports of the suit but stated that no such order had been served on them. He emphasized that the march to the seat of government was necessary to allow citizens to communicate directly with their leaders. Opara added that the organizers had notified the police of the protest and expected them to provide security.

Addressing allegations of a potential clampdown by the police, Adenola placed the responsibility for maintaining peace squarely on the security forces. He argued that the police should ensure they do not provoke protesters and instead protect them. Adenola also confirmed that the organizers had deployed a large number of lawyers on standby to assist any protesters who might be arrested or detained.

Political Support and Public Backing

The protest has garnered significant public backing and support from major opposition figures. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi have publicly endorsed the demonstration, urging the Federal Government to embrace dialogue over the continued detention of Kanu.

Obi reiterated that there was “no need for Kanu’s arrest in the first place,” emphasizing that negotiation remains the only sustainable path to resolving separatist agitations. He commended the efforts of Sowore and other advocates, stating that consultation and discussion are essential.

The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Dr Yunusa Tanko, reaffirmed Obi’s dedication to fairness and equity for all Nigerians. Meanwhile, the National Publicity Secretary of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Ladipo Johnson, stressed that peaceful protest is a legitimate democratic right that must be protected.

Security Measures and Warnings

As the nation braces for the protests, security agencies are deploying personnel and issuing stern warnings. The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Capital Territory Command, has cautioned protesters against vandalizing public or private property. FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu, warned that the corps would not tolerate any form of destruction or theft “in the name of protest.”

Odumosu confirmed the deployment of personnel from specialized units and area commands in strategic locations across Abuja to ensure the safety of residents and protect critical national assets and infrastructure. He stressed that while the corps respects the right to peaceful protest, any attempt to hijack the demonstration for criminal activities would be met with full legal consequences.

Adding to the tension, the Nigerian Correctional Service declared all correctional centers across the country as “Red Zones” ahead of the march. NCoS Spokesperson, Umar Abubakar, warned the public that correctional facilities remain restricted areas and that anyone without official business should stay off to avoid any untoward incidents or security breaches.

Divided Legal Team and Public Sentiment

While the political support swells, Kanu’s legal team is divided over the planned demonstration. Senior Counsel Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN) maintained that he would not oppose the right of citizens to protest for his client’s release; his professional focus remains solely on the judicial process. Conversely, Aloy Ejimakor, another member of Kanu’s legal team, expressed his full support for the demonstration and confirmed his intention to participate.

Ejimakor stated that he endorsed the protest fully because it is the civic and constitutional right of Nigerians to protest. However, he clarified that he could not speak on whether Kanu himself had approved or commented on the protest, as he had not discussed the matter with the IPOB leader.

As the nation prepares for the protests, the situation remains tense, with security forces on high alert and the public closely watching the developments.
