Traffic Restrictions and Cultural Celebrations Ahead of the Coronation

The Oyo State Government has announced significant traffic restrictions around Ibadan’s Mapo Hall as preparations for the coronation of the 44th Olubadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, intensify. The major routes surrounding the venue will be closed from 7:00 am on Friday to ensure security and smooth operations during the event.

The affected areas include Beere Junction inward to Mapo Hall, Born Photo Junction inward to Oja’ba, Idi-Arere Junction inward to Oja’ba, and Itamerin Junction inward to Mapo Hall. These closures are expected to begin at 7:00 am on the specified date. In addition, three official car parks have been designated for the event. These include the Ibadan North Local Government Area car park, in front of the Immigration Office, Agodi; the football field beside Yemetu Police Station; and Liberty Stadium, Oke Ado.

The decision to implement these traffic restrictions is primarily due to the anticipated attendance of President Bola Tinubu at the coronation ceremony. To accommodate attendees, the organising committee has arranged for buses to transport well-wishers with valid invitation cards to Mapo Hall. Vendors are also required to arrive at the venue between 6:00 am and 6:45 am to set up their stalls.

Only the convoys of President Tinubu and Governor Seyi Makinde will be allowed to use the roads leading to Mapo Hall, ensuring a secure environment for the event.

Cultural Activities and Performances

As part of the elaborate eight-day programme marking the coronation, cultural activities have already begun. On Monday evening, Ibadan’s heritage was celebrated by actors and actresses during a performance of Arusa, a play that highlights the royal legacy of Ibadan.

The play, held at the Apex Event Centre in Agodi, attracted dignitaries and featured performances that reflected the rich history of the region. Written by Gbemi Faleti, produced by Biodun Latinwo Eleni, and directed by Yomi Duro-Ladipo, Arusa was initially conceived as a tribute to Ladoja’s 80th birthday but was later integrated into the coronation schedule.

Latinwo explained that the play’s theme evolved as the focus shifted from a birthday celebration to the coronation. He highlighted that the play not only celebrates Ladoja’s journey but also pays homage to his ancestry and the historical significance of his role.

Gbemi Faleti, the writer and associate producer, emphasized that the play weaves the stories of two figures—Arusa Ogungbenro and the modern-day Arusa—into a single narrative. This approach allows the play to transcend time, highlighting themes of resilience, leadership, and destiny across generations.

The production features a star-studded cast, including Dele Odule, Taiwo Ibikunle, Taofeek Adewale, Toyin Adegbola, Akeem Alimi, Gbemi Faleti, Ayo Williams, and Kayode Olaiya, among others.

Cultural Displays and Speeches

On Tuesday, different masqueraders from Yoruba-speaking states showcased their cultural displays in Ibadan, honoring Oba Ladoja. During the event, the President-General of the Cultural Council of Ibadan (CCII), Ajeniyi Ajewole, expressed his belief that Ladoja’s installation as the next Olubadan would elevate Ibadan to a “Eduardo”—a city of excellence comparable to global capitals.

Bayo Oyero, Chairman of the 44th Coronation Committee, emphasized that the event is about showcasing Ibadan’s identity and resilience. He urged residents to participate fully in the upcoming events, stating that the celebrations are not just about dancing and drumming but also about demonstrating the city’s values of courage and innovation.

Adegboye Adegoke, co-chairman of the Special Planning Committee, described the celebration as the beginning of a week filled with cultural and intellectual engagements. He mentioned that the following day would feature a coronation lecture by Prof Toyin Falola, setting the stage for the grand coronation on Friday.

Preparations for the Coronation

The coronation of Oba Rashidi Ladoja, who will be crowned as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, marks a significant moment in the city’s history. Following the passing of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, on July 7, 2025, Ladoja was appointed as the Olubadan-designate.

The coronation ceremony is scheduled for Friday, September 26, which coincides with Ladoja’s 81st birthday. The event will take place at the ancient Mapo Hall in the Ibadan South East Local Government Area, where the community will witness the formal installation of its new leader.
