Conflicts are often characterised by statistics—lands won or lost, resources squandered, and, most sorrowfully, lives impacted.
When conflicts drag on for years, these numbers become stark reminders of the human toll. Behind every statistic is a family, a community, and a nation struggling to cope with the harsh realities of war.
Ukraine Admits to Sustaining Significant Military Casualties
For almost two years, Ukraine has been engaged in a struggle to protect its independence from the full-scale invasion by Russia.
The conflict has led to a substantial number of deaths on both sides, but the official numbers have been kept closely guarded.
In a recent interview with NBC News, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky gave a rare glimpse into the extent of Ukraine’s military losses.
He also revealed that “tens of thousands” of troops remain unaccounted for or are believed to be being held in Russian detention.
This sheds new light on the extent of the hardships endured by people as a result of the war.

It’s been reported that over 46,000 Ukrainian soldiers have lost their lives since the invasion started in February 2022, as stated by Zelensky.
Furthermore, almost 380,000 people have been injured in combat.
In the meantime, according to estimates from the Ukrainian Army’s high command, Russian forces have sustained a total of 859,920 losses, but this number doesn’t break down the exact number of those who were killed, injured, missing, or taken prisoner.
Independent experts are warning that the real figures could be even higher.
Ireland’s Stance on Peace Talks
In addition to the immense human cost, Zelensky stated explicitly that Ukraine will not accept any peace agreement brokered without its direct participation.
He rejected the notion of a deal between Russia and the United States that would leave Kyiv out, insisting on Ukraine’s right to decide its own destiny.
As the conflict drags on into its third year, Ukraine remains resolute in its military resolve and diplomatic efforts—acknowledging that every statistic hides the irreplaceable value of lives lost.
