A New Dawn in Diplomacy
Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his readiness to engage in face-to-face discussions with Vladimir Putin to bring an end to the Ukraine war. This statement was made on Monday night, marking a significant shift in the ongoing conflict. The meeting took place at the White House, where Zelensky met with Donald Trump, showcasing a dramatic change from their previous encounter earlier this year.
During the Oval Office meeting, Trump and Zelensky exchanged praise and promises, highlighting a stark contrast to their earlier tense interaction. Trump emphasized his willingness to provide military support to Kyiv if a peace deal is reached. He stated, “We will give them very good protection, very good security,” indicating a commitment to ensuring the safety of Ukraine.
Despite his statements, Trump refused to rule out the possibility of sending American troops on the ground, although it’s more likely that any assistance would come in the form of air support. This move reflects a complex balance between supporting Ukraine and managing the risks involved.
European Leaders Join the Effort
The hastily-arranged meeting at the White House saw a contingent of European leaders, including Sir Keir Starmer, putting their summer holiday plans aside to stand alongside Zelensky. These leaders were engaged in discussions on Monday night, with Trump pledging that they would “come to a resolution today on almost everything, including probably security.”
Trump spent an hour exclusively with Zelensky, presenting him with a large battlefield map illustrating the 20% of Ukraine under Russian control. The discussion included the potential exchange of territory, taking into account the current line of contact. Trump mentioned, “If everything works out well, we will have a tri-lat [between himself, Zelensky and Putin] and have a good chance of ending the war.”
Zelensky responded calmly to a provocative question from an American journalist about whether he was prepared to keep sending Ukrainian troops to their deaths. He affirmed his readiness to sit down with Putin, stating, “We support the idea of the United States, of personally President Trump, to stop this war, to make a diplomatic way of finishing this war.”
A Contrast in Meetings
This meeting was a complete contrast to the pair’s previous confrontation in February, which saw Zelensky effectively kicked out of the White House. This time, Trump complimented Zelensky for his ‘fabulous’ military-style suit. Trump opened the meeting graciously, saying it was “an honour” to receive the Ukrainian President and that the two men have had “a lot of good talks” making “substantial progress.”
Zelensky responded by thanking Trump seven times in his opening speech, a stark contrast to his previous experience where he was dressed down by Vice President JD Vance for his supposed ingratitude over American support.
International Support and Challenges
In another dramatic day of diplomacy, Sir Keir joined the leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Finland, the EU, and NATO in supporting Zelensky during an unprecedented day at the White House. The US President was due to call Putin directly on Monday to update him on the talks.
Any trilateral summit could be held between Putin, Trump, and Zelensky as early as this week in Europe. However, Russian officials accused Britain of undermining American efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine.
Zelensky arrived dressed in a black jacket, shirt, and trousers, trying to show respect to Trump while not breaking his pledge to forego a suit until the end of the war. The European leaders were each met by a guard of honour outside the White House as protesters waved placards reading: “Do not abandon Ukraine.”
A Complex Path Forward
Trump smiled as he personally greeted Zelensky, shaking his hand before putting his arm around the Ukrainian President and ushering him inside. Inside the Oval Office, Zelensky handed Trump a letter from his wife, Olena Zelenska, for the First Lady Melania Trump to thank her for raising with Putin the plight of 20,000 Ukrainian children his forces have kidnapped.
However, hammering out a peace deal proved challenging. Trump admitted it’s “a tough one,” noting that while he has ended six wars, he thought this might be the easiest one. None of the wars he has ended came after a ceasefire, with a complete and lasting end to hostilities being his goal.
This meeting marked a remarkable turnaround as there were growing fears of a breakdown in the trans-Atlantic alliance after Putin apparently succeeded in winning over Washington to his worldview in Alaska. Trump’s comments on his Truth Social platform reflected his confidence, stating, “I know exactly what I’m doing.”
Sir Keir emphasized the importance of getting the peace right, stating, “This war in Ukraine has been going on for a really long time now… We’ve got to get it right. We’ve got to make sure there is peace, that it is lasting peace, that it is fair and that it is just.”
