10 things you shouldn’t store in the fridge

It’s become the standard option for storing all sorts of foods. From crisp vegetables to fresh fish, this appliance is excellent for keeping your items at the correct chilled temperature, which enables them to stay fresh for longer.

1. Bread

In the fridge. The starch molecules in bread crystallize quite rapidly at cool temperatures, which causes bread to become stale much more quickly when kept refrigerated.

Keep at room temperature.

They’re also great if you want to keep a loaf for a day or two.


2. Onions

You might assume that, as a vegetable, onions belong in the salad crisper drawer, but it’s actually best to store them in a dry, well-ventilated area. Storing them away from other food also stops them transferring their strong smell to unintended areas.

Please keep them in a dark place so they don’t sprout. Additionally, it’s a good idea to note that if you only use half an onion, you can freeze the remainder.


3. Garlic

While there’s nothing wrong with storing garlic in the fridge, if space is limited, it can be perfectly happy in a dry, well-ventilated area.

4. Avocado

He knows that there’s only a small window between them going hard like a rock and turning to mush. Even the ones that are ready to eat can be quite firm when you bring them home, so keep them in open brown paper bags at room temperature and, if you want to quicken the ripening process, keep them near a banana.

5. Tomatoes

They taste better at room temperature and are not that nice if they’re too cold, so take them out and leave them on the kitchen counter out of direct sunlight.


6. Honey

Honey is a natural preservative and doesn’t need refrigerating. And it becomes hard and difficult to spread when it’s too chilly. Pop it back in the cupboard!


7. Cake

Unless your cake has a real cream or a cream cheese filling, or icing, it is acceptable to store it in an airtight container for a period of approximately three days, assuming it lasts that long.


8. Melon

If the melon remains undamaged, leave it sitting in the fruit bowl.

After cutting it, wrap it snugly in cling film, a beeswax wrap or put it in a large food storage container and store it in the fridge. The same applies to mangoes and peppers.


9. Coffee

It should not be stored in the fridge as it can readily take on the smells of other foods. Instead, store it in a sealed container.

10. Anything hot

It’s never a good idea to put hot food directly into the fridge, whether it’s leftover takeaway or something you’ve just cooked. Putting it straight in can cause the fridge to get too hot and make nearby food go off faster, and it also makes the appliance work harder than it needs to.

Just as you want to avoid leaving food out for too long, you should also make sure that items aren’t just left to sit on the side, as they can rapidly accumulate bacteria when the temperature is in the “danger zone”. Instead, let the items cool first and then move them into the fridge once they’ve returned to room temperature.
