(The Hill) — Senator Chuck Grassley from Iowa faced intense questioning regarding the case of Kilmer Agabo Garcia, a man from Maryland who was incorrectly deported to El Salvador, during an impassioned confrontation.
at a town hall
he held Tuesday.

During the Iowa gathering, Grassley touched upon several subjects such as farmers, tariffs, and the planned reconciliation bill from congressional Republicans that would
seek to cut spending
, prolong President Trump’s tax reductions and allocate funds for border security, along with various other initiatives. However, he was involved in a notably distinctive discussion.
tense back-and-forth
When talking about the case involving Abrego Garcia, who is a Salvadoran citizen.

“Are you going to bring that guy back from El Salvador?” one man asked Grassley, eliciting applause from others in attendance.

“Why not?” he followed up after the Iowa senator said he wouldn’t.

Abrego Garcia has received national attention after the Trump administration acknowledged
he was mistakenly deported
back to El Salvador because of an “administrative error” and the
Supreme Court has ruled
The administration needs to “help” with his comeback.

But the Justice Department
suspended the attorney
who said the man’s removal was an error, and the administration has
not shown signs of taking measures
to get him returned to the United States

Grassley said returning Abrego Garcia isn’t a congressional power, to which various attendees responded that the Supreme Court had ruled that
he should be returned
to the U.S., and Trump needs to adhere to the Constitution. They contended that he is disregarding the country’s supreme legal body.

“He just got an order from the Supreme Court, and he just said no,” another attendee said.

The senator stated that El Salvador is an autonomous nation and its president doesn’t fall under the purview of the U.S. Supreme Court, prompting outcries from the crowd. During his trip to the U.S. on Monday, El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele commented on this as well.

Several participants reacted with frustration, as one gentleman exclaimed, “I’m fed up.”

Another pointed out the administration’s decision to allocate $6 million to El Salvador.

The U.S. is sending funds to the Central American nation with the statement, “We’re paying to keep him down there. We don’t have to pay them.”

Grassley subsequently attempted to shift to the following topic; however, another individual interrupted, referencing the Fifth Amendment of the Constitution, which ensures due process rights for every “individual” and not merely citizens.

“Why aren’t you doing your job, Senator?” the man questioned.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt
has claimed
Abrego Garcia is a “foreign terrorist” and member of the MS-13 gang, but his family has maintained he isn’t part of a gang and rather fled El Salvador as a teenager to escape gang violence.

Abrego Garcia resided in Maryland and benefited from a court order preventing deportation in 2019.

Another attendee asked the Republican lawmaker what he considers a “constitutional crisis” and quoted the oath that Grassley took upon being sworn in as a senator. He said he believes he is doing what the Constitution requires, referencing a
bipartisan bill he introduced
to enhance Congress’s involvement in setting tariff regulations.

His town hall is the latest in which Republican members of Congress have received pushback from constituents over Trump’s policies, which has led to Democrats
holding town halls
In districts held by Republicans, aiming to leverage the discontent among voters.
