Did you know that Sweden serves as a gateway to an ancient era? In Tanum, this is particularly true, thanks to its extensive collection of prehistoric rock carvings, which makes it home to some of the most significant petroglyphs in Northern Europe.

Situated approximately 90 minutes north of Göteborg, this intriguing location was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. It provides an exclusive glimpse into Scandinavian artwork dating back to the Bronze Age (circa 1500–500 BC). These remarkable etchings were carefully crafted onto the granitic bedrock and illustrate various aspects of daily life such as hunting, agriculture, spiritual ceremonies, and mythical entities.

Begin your exploration at the Vitlycke Museum for insights through a guided tour before visiting one of the four accessible rock-art locations—Vitlycke, Aspeberget, Litsleby, and Fossum—to view these historical artifacts firsthand. In Vitlycke, observe depictions of ships and active individuals; meanwhile, Aspeberget showcases intricately carved bulls alongside sun symbols. Litsleby features the biggest human form clutching a spear, possibly symbolizing a deity associated with warfare. Lastly, Fossum presents intricate designs reflecting olden tales and sagas inscribed upon stone surfaces. Absolutely captivating!
