A Disheartening Defeat and Lingering Doubts

The recent 5-1 defeat of Remo Stars, the reigning Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions, by Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg of the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League has left many questioning their legitimacy as league winners. This humiliating loss has reignited suspicions that the “Sky Blue” team may have been aided in securing their historic NPFL title.

Despite previous early exits in continental competitions, many had hoped that Remo Stars would use this campaign to prove themselves on Africa’s biggest stage. However, their chances now seem slim, with only a miracle offering them a chance to progress against the more experienced and motivated Mamelodi Sundowns, who are poised to finish the job at home.

A Season of Dominance

Remo Stars had an impressive start to the 2024 NPFL season, which culminated in their first-ever title. They managed to secure 18 points on the road, the highest by any club in the season, with notable away wins against Abia Warriors, Kano Pillars, Akwa United, Sunshine Stars, and regional rivals 3SC. They also earned draws at Enyimba, Ikorodu City, and Lobi Stars, which were all relegated later in the season.

Their home record was equally impressive, with no home defeats in 38 matches. The worst results at home were two draws against Rivers United and Katsina United, meaning they dropped only two points in 19 home games. Throughout the entire season, they suffered only 11 defeats, including losses to formidable teams like Kano Pillars, Abia Warriors, and Akwa United.

A Historic Title and Suspicion

Remo Stars secured their title in style, opening an unassailable 10-point gap when they defeated Niger Tornadoes 1-0 in week 35 to amass 68 points. Their closest rivals, Rivers United, remained at 58 points after a 0-2 loss at Kano Pillars. It was a tense moment, but Olamilekan Adedayo’s last-minute goal sealed the historic title for Remo Stars.

While many believed in their victory, some stakeholders questioned whether it was facilitated by the generosity of their proprietor, Kunle Soname. Known for his generous contributions to Nigerian football, there were whispers that Remo Stars might have received favorable treatment. However, their consistent performances both at home and away made it difficult to believe that their success was artificial.

A New Setback

The recent defeat by Mamelodi Sundowns and the poor performance of the Remo Stars-dominated CHAN Eagles at the African Nations Championship have revived these doubts. The match in Abeokuta was a golden opportunity for the Nigerian champions to prove their worth, but they crumbled under pressure, leaving fans and critics alike questioning their legitimacy.

A few days before the match, Soname had warned that Nigerian clubs lacked the financial strength to compete against top African teams. He highlighted the disparity between the salaries of Nigerian players, often paid in the devalued naira, and those of their counterparts in dollars. His prediction seemed to come true when Mamelodi Sundowns dominated the match.

A Question of Merit

Many had hoped that Remo Stars would redeem themselves after their earlier exit from the Confederation Cup. When they were drawn against Mamelodi Sundowns, there was optimism that Nigeria’s dominance over South Africa would prevail. Unfortunately, the result was the opposite, and the team was exposed as being unprepared for elite competition.

Now, Nigerians are left wondering if Rivers United, who finished as runners-up and are on the verge of qualifying for the CAF Champions League group stage, deserved the title instead. Their narrow 0-1 loss to Black Bulls of Mozambique was a close call, but it raises questions about whether Remo Stars truly earned their place as champions.

The Road Ahead

With the return leg set for October 26 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium, Remo Stars face an uphill battle. If they can manage a draw, it could help restore some of their lost reputation. However, a repeat of the first leg would be devastating.

As the saying goes, “It’s not over until it’s over,” but for Remo Stars, the odds are heavily stacked against them. Only time will tell if they can recover from this setback and prove their worth on the continental stage.
