No more US alcohol in Canadian stores

Posted on

Since the sale of alcohol is highly regulated in Canada, only official stores can sell it. And several provinces have decided to stop the sale of American alcoholic products…

Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba and British Columbia have decided to ban alcohol, wine and beer from the United States (only from Republican states for British Columbia). The action is a response to the customs duties imposed by the Trump administration. The sale of alcohol in Canada is reserved for stores under the control of the public authorities of the various provinces. In Quebec, messages have appeared on the shelves of the SAQ for each alcohol concerned:

$650 million

Even restaurants and bars must obtain their supplies from the official wholesaler’s stores. Thus, it sells a billion Canadian dollars each year, or about 695 million US dollars or 650 million euros worth of alcohol from the USA. American producers may have to find new markets to sell their stocks or cross their fingers that Donald Trump quickly changes his point of view… In the meantime, Canadians will be able to taste local whiskey, Chilean wine or better, Belgian beer.
