A Celebration of Youth Innovation in Nigeria’s Aviation Sector

Leaders from Nigeria’s aviation industry, regulators, and young innovators gathered in Lagos for the grand finale of the 15th Annual National Travel Essay Competition (NTEC 2026) and the Air Transport Youth Empowerment Summit (YES). The event underscored the crucial role of youth innovation and leadership in shaping the future of Nigeria’s aerospace sector. The gathering brought together a diverse group of participants, including students, educators, aviation professionals, and industry leaders, to explore how young people can drive progress in an ever-evolving field.

The event, organized by Travel & Business News, took place on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) Annex located at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. This year’s edition marked 15 years of dedicated efforts to identify and develop talent within Nigeria’s aviation industry.

Under the theme “Soaring Beyond Limits: Youth Innovation and Leadership in Aviation,” the summit focused on the importance of empowering young people as technological advancements continue to reshape global aviation. The discussions highlighted the need for young professionals to adapt to new challenges while contributing innovative ideas to the sector.

Dr Gbenga Olowo, Chairman of Sabre Central and West Africa, represented by Mr Nurudeen Adeokin, emphasized that the competition’s 15-year journey is a testament to sustained investment in human capital development. He stated that the future growth of the aviation industry will not be driven solely by infrastructure but by young innovators and thinkers who are willing to embrace change. Sabre’s commitment to talent development through academic collaborations and corporate social responsibility initiatives was also highlighted, with a call for participants to prepare for an aviation landscape increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, automation, and data intelligence.

Capt. Chris Najomo, Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, represented by Mrs Carol Adekotujo, linked the summit’s theme to ongoing developments in the industry, including the expansion of airline fleets facilitated by the Cape Town Convention. He encouraged aspiring aerospace engineers, pilots, cabin crew professionals, and air traffic controllers to seek practical exposure through workshops and mentorship opportunities. Capt. Najomo stressed the importance of developing expertise in emerging technologies such as autonomous aircraft systems, electric-powered aircraft, and sustainable aviation fuels.

Mrs Rita Geh, Assistant Comptroller General (Narcotics) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), spoke on behalf of Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), emphasizing the importance of maintaining a drug-free lifestyle for aviation professionals. She noted that substance abuse prevention is a professional and safety necessity, given the high level of concentration required in aviation operations. Through the agency’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign, she encouraged participants to become advocates against drug abuse and to safeguard their mental well-being in order to maximize their creative potential.
